What could be causing skin problems on a stray dog I found?

Poor doggy. It could be flea infestation, flea allergic dermatitis, mange, fungal disease, alopecia due to metabolic and system disease. Really hard to tell by the picture but definitely need a vet check up. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.

Oh poor guy. It's very difficult to guess what could be wrong from a picture alone. He'd need a skin scrap to look for bacteria, yeast, and parasites to know if any of those are present. I would be concerned about fleas and a flea allergy, and if you could apply a flea treatment to him that could certainly help. I'm not sure what's available where you are, but Revolution and Frontline Plus are two popular options in the US (along with many oral medications which are better but prescription only such as nexgrad and bravecto). Beyond that, I'm not sure what you can do without some testing.

Thank you for showing concern and compassion for this little guy. The wound appears to be most likely caused by chronic fleas, bacterial infection (hot spot), or mite infestation. It could have also been caused by an injury or burn - a little difficult to tell with just a photo. Your vet should be able to help you figure it out. In the meantime, try to keep him from scratching the area and keep it as clean as possible.

There are four main causes of persistent skin issues and you must figure out the underlying cause to address the problem. The causes are: flea allergy, food allergy (this needs to be ruled out with a hydrolyzed diet), environmental allergy or hypothyroidism. With out any further information, it’s hard to know how to advise next steps. If your veterinarian is not comfortable with treating chronic skin conditions, find one who is. I recommend to rule out fleas with a product like Simparica. I rule out food allergy with a diet called Ultamino. Hypothyroidism is a blood test. Environmental allergies are unfortunately very common and also more complicated but they can be determined with a blood test as well. However, this could also be something like allergies. This cannot be diagnosed just based on a picture and would require a veterinary evaluation. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, parasites, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing this. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications.

Skin problems can have a variety of causes, sometimes more than one. Allergies, parasites, bacterial or fungal infections, even contact with some surfaces or substances will cause itching, rash and/or hair loss. It is important to have the problem checked by your vet to determine if there is a medical cause for your pet’s skin issues and treat accordingly. In pets of all ages, fleas, food allergies and exposure to chemical irritants such as cleaners and soaps can be a cause. Any one of these may not be enough to trigger the breakouts, depending on how sensitive your pet is, but a combination can be enough to start the itch-scratch cycle. Finding out the cause and eliminating it is the best course of action. With flea allergies, if your pet is sensitive enough, a single bite can cause them to break out scratch enough to tear their skin. Check for fleas with a flea comb. Look for fleas and/or tiny black granules, like coarse black pepper. This is flea feces, consisting of digested, dried blood. You may find tiny white particles, like salt, which are the flea eggs. Applying a good topical monthly flea treatment and aggressively treating your house and yard will help break the flea life cycle. If you use plastic bowls, this is a possible cause for hair loss, though this tends to be on the chin, where their skin touches the bowl while they eat. If you suspect this to be the culprit, try changing the bowls to glass, metal or ceramic. Food allergies are often caused by sensitivity to a protein in the food. Hill's Science Diet offers some non-prescription options for sensitive skin as well as prescription hypoallergenic foods for more severe cases. Royal Canin carries limited protein diets that may also offer some relief. Your vet can recommend a specific diet that will help. If there is no relief or not enough, consider getting your pet checked by a veterinary dermatologist and having allergy testing done.
