My male dog is trying to mate with my new puppy. How to stop it?

This definitely can be happening because Buddy is feeling uncomfortable. I would continue to have monitored meet and greet sessions, and if someone becomes too nervous or starts to try humping behavior, separate and let both dogs relax. Sometimes, dogs do well with mutual activities such as a walk or running around a backyard as this can help them focus on something else (the walk) instead of focusing entirely on the other dog. This may also help nervous dogs calm down a little by changing their focus. It does take time for dogs to get used to each other, so keeping up with the meet and greets, adding in a mutual activity, and providing places for both dogs to go and relax on their own without the other bothering them is best. I would not discipline the behavior, especially if your dogs are trying to communicate their needs to each other, and instead just calmly separate, allow them to calm down, and then reintroduce.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Humping isn't always sexual in nature, dogs can hump to show dominance or from anxiety. All this is very new for Cubby. It has only been one day and he will need time to acclimate. I would always keep Cubby leased to an adult and when he starts getting rough, make him sit or lay down and give him a treat. Consider the muzzle gentle leader to control him better. Be sure to provide adequate exercise and play with Cubby. They can be jealous about how affection is given. This is not a sexual behavior, but likely a response to stress, anxiety or to assert his dominance. Correct the behavior immediately when you see it. Remove him from the dog with a stern "No" and offer a toy or task to distract him. Praise and reward him when he complies. If he persists, separate him until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent.

I see that Lelo isn't spayed, but I'm not sure if Brady is neutered or not. He is likely very interested in her because she is an intact female and he may want to mate with her. I would not recommend mating them because it sounds like Brady's breed mix leads him to be a much larger dog than Lelo, and you should need mate a male to a female that is much smaller than her. This leads to large puppies and subsequent birthing difficulties often leading to emergency c-sections. I recommend having Lelo spayed and Brady neutered if he's still intact. Given that Jake is not neutered and you have introduced a new male puppy into the home, he may be urinating on the new puppy to declare his status as top dog in the home. He is letting the new puppy known that he is top of the hierarchy in the home, and that the new puppy is below him in status. This reason is most likely if he physically dominating the puppy (standing tall over him) as he does this behavior. I would consider neutering Jake to help reduce hormone related behavior.

Neutering both dogs at 1 year of age may help if this is related to the female (male dogs may still try to claim possession of her even if she is fixed). If the younger dog is already exhibiting undesirable behaviors, you may look at neutering him now. There is a possibility this is not related to the female. Working with a professional trainer may be your best option. Also, after the neutering, the hormones will still be around for about a month so it’s not instantaneous. I hope this helps.
