How do I stop my excited puppy from constantly bothering my older dog?

Puppies at this age can be very determined! I would encourage you to have some time when the older dog is separated from the puppy to give her a rest. I would also encourage you to keep the puppy on a leash (supervised) when around the other dog so you can recall and redirect his attention when needed. Also having a squirt bottle available to squirt his face when annoying the other dog Can be helpful. The More consistent you are on correction the more quickly he will learn not to annoy her. That is normal puppy behavior. All you can do is keep them separated. You are not going to be able to stop the puppy from doing normal puppy things. I suggest you crate train the puppy and take turns letting him out to run around and crating him. When he is out running around put the older dogs outside (if you have a yard) or in another room so they can get some peace. The puppy also needs to learn from Biscuit when enough is enough, this is an important life lesson. Energetic puppies are a lot for older dogs to handle and you are going to have to accept that Biscuit may never love the puppy but may just tolerate him. You need to intervene when the puppy is pushing too much and find other ways to use up his energy: puppy training classes, the dog park, doggie day care, other play dates with more willing dogs. Puppies can be very rambunctious, and may not yet understand "dog language" so it could be that your older dogs are attempting to teach her appropriate boundaries. Appropriate body language behaviors saying things are "too much" can include showing teeth, low growling or snapping at the air around your puppy. If Elly backs off at this point, she is actually learning to read those signals and not escalate the behavior. However, if it is escalating to full bites, or your puppy continues to pester the dogs even if they've told her off, it is time to step in and give everyone a time out. Removing Elly from the situation completely in either a crate for some time out with a toy, or in a different room can help. Puppies are VERY full of energy, so extra walks or a puppy kindergarten class where she can interact with other dogs her age and size can help her learn to interact safely while burning excess energy. Once she is vaccinated, the dog park can be a place to go, but it is best that she knows how to properly interact with and respond to "dog language" prior to going so a fight doesn't start. If you are concerned that things are getting bad between all the dogs, it is best to keep them separated at all times unless under close supervision, and to contact a local trainer or behaviorist in your area that can help you in person.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Humping isn't always sexual in nature, dogs can hump to show dominance or from anxiety. All this is very new for Cubby. It has only been one day and he will need time to acclimate. I would always keep Cubby leased to an adult and when he starts getting rough, make him sit or lay down and give him a treat. Consider the muzzle gentle leader to control him better. Be sure to provide adequate exercise and play with Cubby. They can be jealous about how affection is given. If the behavior doesn't start to calm down I would call your Vet monday for temporary "doggie downers" to calm him. I hope this helps and I wish everyone the very best!

For now, I would recommend keeping Marge on-leash whenever the dogs are together - this way, you can prevent her from chasing him, and can also reward her for remaining calm when he is around. When you aren't able to do this, it would be best to keep them separated to prevent any problems. As Marge gets older, this problem should improves as she settles down a bit. If these suggestions don't help and there is no improvement in the situation in the next week or so, I would recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer who can work with you in person to help address this issue. I certainly understand and sympathize with your situation. I have a young dog. I have a few suggestions for you that have helped me. One thing that people think of first is treats that keep them busy for a longer period of time. This does seem to help. You can use long lasting treats like a Kong filled with peanut butter, yogurt, treats, etc and frozen so it takes longer for him to eat. My dog also really like Bully Sticks which I also freeze to make them last a little longer. Keep him mentally and physically busy during meal times. I love using a feeding balls like a Buster Cube or Tricky Treat ball to feed meals in. It keeps him busy for at least 5-10 minutes at each meal and requires him to work. And speaking of working. I have found that my dog is the most tired after we have done a good round of training. Even if you have done a basic obedience class, I would consider trying an advanced class, a nose work class, a tricks class, etc. And if taking a class isn't an option right now, work on training at home. When he goes on walks, make him sit at each corner before he crosses the street. It sounds simple, but additional mental stimulation can go a long way. Playing with other dogs is a great outlet for energy. If you haven't tried it yet, look into your local dog park or doggy daycare center. Sending my youngest dog to daycare once a week has made a huge difference. There are a number of interactive dog games and toys available now. Outward Hound makes a number of toys that your dog has to figure out a puzzle of some type before they get a treats.
