How to stop my dogs from fighting over personal space and resources?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 10 months old | 54 lbs

How do I stop one dog from becoming angry at another dog when they enter each other’s personal space? How do I teach the dogs to share space and the same couch? If one looks out the window and the other one comes along a fight breaks out and it worries me that one day they will have an actual fight and injure one another. Also they break out in fight if they are both begging next to each other.

I hate to hear that the dogs are not getting online. It can be very frustrating and scary to be in this situation. Unfortunately there is not an easy answer for you. There is also not a short answer. When aggression is involved, its best to work with a behaviorist. Generally there are signs the dogs are giving prior to the fights that many people do not realize are significant. Often times there are underlying problems of dominance issues, possessiveness and anxiety.
Exercise and behavioral modification are much needed in these cases. I would recommend to not only contact a local behaviorist but to also do some reading about animal behavior. Best of luck in this complicated situation.
