How to stop my dog from wheezing when pulling on leash in car?

Many dogs suffer from anxiety when travelling, acclimatizing them to a safe crate now before the journey home, which can be used in the car can help as can calming supplements, pheromone sprays and magnetic collars. In severe cases, a vet may prescribe mild tranquilizer medications but these are not without risks outside of the supervision of trained veterinary staff, especially on a long journey and with an older pug. It sounds like she has some anxiety about certain places. I would talk to your vet about starting her on a daily anti-anxiety medicine like fluoxetine. This may take the edge off so she can continue to go with you everywhere. I hope this helps

Since she’s young I don’t recommend any medication. I would go sit with her in the car several times a day, without turning it on. When she gets used to that then sit with her with the car running. When she’s used to that take her for a one or two minute ride only. Gradually she will get used to the movement and get over both the anxiety and car sickness that some dogs get. For small dogs I recommend a booster car seat so they can see out but are secured with a harness to prevent excess movement during the ride. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ivy. I do not recommend using a shock collar. I have seen severe skin injuries and infections from these collar. You can try a food puzzle toy to keep her occupied in the car when you have passengers. A citronella collar is better alternative to a shock collar, but would likely stink up your car. Finally, she could have anxiety and be stressed by passengers. Her veterinarian may be able to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication or supplement to help calm her. I hope this information helps!

That's the first thing to try, a harness is usually solving this type of problem in dogs that are pulling to hard, the collar presses on the trachea and it causes breathing problems and coughing. if this is not the reason for this symptom then the harness will not help and you can see it pretty much immediately, in that case my advise would be to take her to the vet in order to get that checked ASAP.
