How do I stop my Yorkie from constantly humping our new puppy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

We have a 2 yo Yorkie Terrier who was not socialized as a puppy. He spent all of his time with us. When we would take him for walks he would get really scared. We moved from NYC to Durham, NC.He was acting out a lot. Started pooping and peeing in the house when he never did before. So we brought home a puppy thinking it would help. His behavior has gotten better but he won’t stop trying to hump the puppy. We’ve tried body blocking and telling him to sit when he starts but it hasn’t stopped. Help!

When dogs hump other dogs it’s often a way to show dominance rather than being sexual behavior. I expect this to stop when he’s sure he’s boss and the puppy is submissive. I recommend distracting him with a treat or toy or taking him for a walk. If you make too much of this behavior it might reinforce it so I’d try distraction over discipline. As the puppy grows and they settle in together this should stop. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dogs.
