Why is my dog digging up and eating buried bones? How to stop?

Many times, digging can be a sign of boredom and understimulation. This can also be a behavioral problem. The things you can do to help prevent digging are as follows: 1. Increase exercise and get Duke to play more. Dog parks, increased walks, playing fetch, etc. can all be beneficial 2. Don't allow toys outside. Many dogs dig and bury toys outside so not allowing toys outside can prevent this. 3. Provide an area that you permit digging. Train Duke so that he knows it is okay to dig in a certain area of the yard. 4. Get Duke enrolled in dog sports or training classes I hope these help! Some dogs always do this and some do it because they don't want it or they have some anxiety. Does she eventually eat it? If so then she likely just saving it for later. Does she only do it when it is storming or other times when she is anxious? If so this is likely anxiety. Does she never go back to eat it and she won't eat it out of her bowl either, then she may not like that food and is wanting something different. I hope this helps!

There is probably not much you can do about the whining/crying. For the trying to bury it I would make him calm down and lay down to eat it. As for stealing other dogs bones, I would have your friends pick up their dogs bone and be sure to teach Cori how to listen and come. If he sees a bone he should know to "leave it" and "drop it." Digging in bed is a natural instinct and not a sign of misbehavior. In the wild, dogs have the instinct to hide in comfortable, protected areas when they sleep. You could try to redirect the behavior when you see her digging in her bed or try to find an indestructible dog bed that she can't put holes in it when she digs. Maybe also put blankets over her bed that she is allowed to dig in to satisfy her natural instinct of digging.

I would take the raw bone away from Sam. I personally never recommend giving bones to dogs, as they can splinter in the GI tract causing damage and perforation. They also break teeth and can cause obstruction. If you take the bone away, that will help his nose heal. Instead, you can give him chew toys to play with, and you can fill a Kong toy with peanut butter, freeze it in the freezer overnight, and give it to him to eat. That will keep him occupied for a while. Puzzle toys that he has to solve to get a great are also great for puppies.

It sounds like this may be a learned behavior for him since he is on a good quality diet and nutritional deficiencies are unlikely. I would recommend distracting him with some play time with his favorite toy in the morning when he tends to do this so you are not giving him attention (even though it is negative attention) for eating the dirt. In order to completely stop this behavior you may need to prevent his access to the dirt by putting something like a basket muzzle on him.

Hello. Other than the possibility of either dog vomiting up the bones in the middle of the night, they probably will be fine. Bones, while not recommended to be fed, will be digested. If this was a large carcass, like from a deer or cow, a dog can consume enough bone to either cause a blockage of severe constipation. But since this was a much smaller critter, I see no problems. Disease/parasite problems are nil, but may be a very small possibility. If your dogs are on a broad spectrum heartworm preventative, they are covered for parasites, otherwise a good wormer would not hurt. Watch for any signs of abdominal discomfort, prolonged diarrhea, inappetence or vomiting that lasts longer for a day or so, but if there are no issues, the bones will be gone in the next 12-18 hours.
