If he is digging a hole in the mattress while you are present, you need to correct the behavior. If you are sleeping through this, put a few bells on his collar so that they will jingle when he is moving around and wake you up. If this is happening while you’re not home, it is unlikely you will be able to correct the behavior since you were not there to supervise. In that instance you need to block his access to the bedroom or keep him in a crate anytime you are not home to watch him. I hope this helps.

You will need to train him to stop this like any other undesirable behavior. You may try teaching him the down command and when he is exhibiting the digging, give him the down command. It will take some time to change the behavior so be patient and reward the good behavior. Best of luck.
