How soon can I train my new 9-week-old puppy without overwhelming her?

You can start training a puppy as young as 8 weeks to do basic commands such as sit, lay down, and stay. Puppies have a short attention span, however, so training sessions should be kept to 15 minutes max. They can have a couple of training sessions a day.

Train each puppy individually and keep sections short, no more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Begin with one basic command such as "sit" or "lay down". Be patient and consistent. Use plenty of praise and rewards as they progress.

Hello. It is never too early to start some very basic training & advocating for good manners in a puppy. Discourage any chewing or rough play using hands or feet. Gentle reminders & plenty or other things to chew on are the key. If your pup is already on a solid, but soft diet, then do not let her charge over & eat her food in seconds. Make her sit as quiet as possible for 10-15 seconds before allowing her to eat. Begin some basic obedience with her. Sit, stay, shake a paw are all possible for her to begin to understand at this age. While you can not take her out to associate with others, as soon as she has had all of her puppy shots, begin to socialize her with other pets & people ( as long as it is safe to do so with this pandemic ). If you treat her well, with a firm kindness, she should respond well to you. We will just have to wait & see how things progress with this virus, but the more professional training help you can get, the better a canine citizen your pup will be. You can start training your puppy right away :) The best way to train is to use treats to show Tukas what you want him to do, then reward with the treat when he gets it right. You can teach sit, lie down, stay, come, and heel this way very easily with most puppies. At six weeks her immune system is very vulnerable to disease and she must be isolated away from unvaccinated dogs and exposure to wildlife until she is fully protected - i recommend an urgent vet check to assess her vaccination and deworming history and to make sure she is otherwise well. Her training can begin right away and it is important for her to develop a sense of independence and security away from you to prevent separation anxiety as she gets older

If you have access to a good puppy kindergarten class in your area, I would definitely recommend signing up - the instructor can show you how to start working with your pup to help her understand what you want and develop a good relationship with her. This normally involves using treats or other rewards your pup enjoys, and teaching her that good things happen for her when she pays attention to you.
