Can spirulina boost my French Bulldog puppy's immune system?

To the best of my knowledge, no studies have been done focusing on spirulina. Supplements and what not are no well regulated or even tested to see if they do what the manufacturer claims the do. Spirulina can contain toxins and pollution if not grown carefully under the right conditions. I recommend to stick with established pet food companies who have a proven track record of making quality food in a safe fashion. You could try one at a time like coconut oil or I prefer fish oil for the immune system plus it works great for the haircoat and joints. I personally think these are a waste of money. If Bruno is on a high quality diet he should not need any extra supplements unless he is sick and your vet has suggested it. The Beaphar doesn't have anything in it that his regular food doesn't already have. I don't see how this will boost his immunity. For the Drool's product I cannot find a list of ingredients anywhere so I cannot comment on it. If you would like to post again as to why you think he needs a supplement maybe we can help you better.

As for other immune support, I like Omega 3's (http://vrshealth.com/canine-products/omegadog/), probiotics (Purina fortiflora which can be found online), feed a high quality diet and you could discuss acupuncture as well. Man, that's a loaded question! In general, choose a good-quality commercial dog food, which will provide all necessary protein, fiber, minerals, and nutrients that a dog needs. There are different formulations that are appropriate for dogs with specific issues, but at 4 months of age, I would not expect Mia to have a sensitive stomach or food allergies - discuss this with your vet, though. Adding in a pet probiotic & prebiotic is an excellent idea for intestinal health in all dogs (just like in all humans!) but it has to be given every day to have any positive effect. Probiotics designed for dogs tend to work better than human probiotics. Keeping Mia on good food and flea and tick and heartworm preventatives and vaccinating her according to your vet's recommendation is the best way to keep her immune system at its peak performance.

If he is eating a good quality food, he shouldn't need vitamin supplementation. If you want though, you can give him Pet Tabs daily. As stated, feed a good quality diet. Stay away from store or discount brands which tend to have low quality ingredients and fillers. Regular veterinary care and vaccinations are important. Parasite prevention is also important. He should get a monthly preventative against heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas and ticks. You can discuss options with your vet. Keep him lean and active and love him to pieces!

You can add pet probiotics into his diet, and make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Supplements like fish oils are anti-inflammatory and support the immune system - I would try 100mg of combined DHA and EPA per kg of body weight. There are also alternative therapies like acupuncture, herbs, and food therapy that can be used to support the immune system and decrease inflammation. I would look for a certified veterinary acupuncturist in your area, or a vet that practices holistic medicine for guidance with herbal or even food therapy for inflammation.
