Why does my spayed dog act like she's in heat every few months?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | spayed

My 3 yo desexed female Australian Cattle Dog has a recurring problem. Every 3-4 months she will try to escape and shows strange behaviour, rapid panting, pacing aimlessly, eyes darting. This last about 3 days then she returns to normal behaviour. Can this be a mental link to her thinking she is in season?

That is unusual behavior for a dog but I do not suspect it is related to her mentally thinking she is in heat. That being said, dogs can have a heat cycle if they were not spayed properly or if they have too many ovaries. Your veterinarian can preform a simple blood test to determine if ovarian tissue is present. Next time she exhibits these symptoms, have her seen while she is showing signs as a blood test is more likely to find evidence of ovaries if they are present. That will at least rule that out. Other potential causes could include Addison’s disease or anxiety.

If Din is still showing signs of being in heat while spayed this is not normal behavior. It may be that there is an infection of the urinary tract or other problem such as a hormonal issue that is causing her to exhibit signs of heat while spayed. It is best to seek veterinary care ASAP to have the issue examined.

Yes and no! If Arrow was spayed recently (in the past few weeks) and was about to go into heat sometimes the hormones stay around long enough for one heat cycle. Occasionally ovarian tissue is left behind or there is extra tissue that can then cause a heat cycle. It’s also possible that she has bloody discharge from the vulva due to a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian. They might recommend collecting a urine sample or obtaining a sample for vaginal cytology to see if it looks like Arrow is truly in heat.

Why does my unneutered male dog act like my spayed female is in heat?

Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.

It sounds like she is showing heat behaviors, and this can be a sign of an ovarian remnant left behind. I'd have her seen by a vet today or tomorrow for a hormone stimulation test. If your female dog isn't spayed, she could be coming into heat causing this behavior. Female dogs go into heat around every six months, and if you have had her for five months, it would be about time to go into heat again. Why is my spayed dog still having phantom pregnancies after surgery?

I would expect the problem not to reoccur a month after the spay surgery, but in some cases it can take up to two month for full effect of the operation. If by then the issue happens again then I would suspect there is a problem, possibly an email topic ovarian tissue some were in the abdominal cavity that was not removed during the spay and is still secreting female hormones. If it does happen again, a blood test to measure these hormones will be the next step.

My spayed dog seems to be in heat. Is this normal or serious?

If Bella is spayed (as you indicated on your pet profile) and she is having her period, she needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. A spayed dog does not have a period. If she is not spayed, you can feed her and exercise her as normal. Make sure to NEVER leave her outside unattended (she will be more prone to escaping and males will try to come in the yard). Why is my dog acting weird, clingy, and moody during her first heat?

Hello, sorry to hear about Snowy. Yes occasionally female dogs may have increased attention demands after their heat cycle. However, some of these similar signs may be seen with a false pregnency.
