When to spay a German Shepherd puppy? Should she have a litter?

It is generally recommended to spay your dog before her first heat cycle at around 6-7 months of age. This can help avoid unwanted puppies, and can also decrease/remove the chances of certain cancers later in life. Having a litter does nothing to improve your dog or her health, and is actually very stressful on the body - you also bring more pets into the world which can lead to an increase in pet overpopulation.

There is some evidence that waiting until an adult has reached skeletal maturity, which for a female dog occurs around the same time as the first heat cycle, is beneficial for bone and joint development and could decrease the risk for orthopedic disease in the future. This is relatively new research however, and if you have reasons to want to schedule the surgery now it should be fine too - many shelter animals are spayed when they are 8 weeks old prior to adoption.

Large dogs such as Tasha often do not come into heat until 10-15 months old so I'm not concerned yet. I like to have them be at least two years old and have their hips checked with an X-ray for hip dysplasia before breeding. German Shepard Dogs can have bad hips that can be passed on to the puppies so I always want to make sure both parents have good hips before breeding. Generally I recommend the female dog only have one to two litters as having puppies and raising them is a lot of work for her, and you too! I usually recommend to have the spay done before the first season, although in her case she is probably so close the her first season that you might not have time to have it done. however it's not a major issue, it's absolutely fine to have it done after the first season as well.

Ideally spay can be done at 6 or 7 months of age. It can be done before the first heat but most of the time we ended up doing the operation after the first one. Surgery seems to have a preventive action against mammary gland tumors especially if performed before the first season.

It's never recommended to mate a female dog older than six years of age due to the increased difficulty of giving birth. I would wait another week, then take Sydney into the vet for a blood test to look for the hormone relaxin. If that is present, then she is pregnant. Should she be pregnant, you can have her spayed to terminate the pregnancy and prevent any future pregnancies. Spaying her would also prevent her from developing a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. If you do decide to keep the pregnancy, then I would work closely with your vet during her pregnancy so that any problems are identified quickly. You should also be prepared both emotionally and financially for the possibility of her needing a c section to give birth safely. I hope this helps!

Typically, the first heat cycle will occur between 6 and 9 months of age. It really depends on the individual dog and there is no way to determine when your dog will go into heat for the first time. You can have her spayed at 4 months, but you will likely need to take her somewhere else if your veterinarian won't do it. Waiting until 6 months should not pose an issue though. It's the age a large percentage of dogs are spayed or neutered.
