Which small dog breeds are least likely to cause kids' allergies?

While no dogs are completely hypoallergenic there are some that have less dander than others. The most common of these breeds include the poodle, the Bichon Frise, and the Maltese. Chihuahuas do shed like other dogs, however there are a few things you can do to help reduce allergens to your child. Brushing Silly daily in a room that the hair can easily be swept up can help reduce shedding and release of dander. Using a pet wipe or baby wipe when Silly comes in from outside can also help reduce allergens such as pollen and dander stuck to her fur and keep them from spreading. Using an in-home purifier and allergy meds with your child may also help reduce reactions to any fur or dander in the house.

Maybe a dog would be a better pet for you. Cats by nature can be standoffish, and while there are breeds that are extremely affectionate like Ragdolls, that would not be good for your allergies. I would think very carefully about getting another pet, and I say this gently. Given this would be #4, it's not fair to the animal to keep giving them away in search of finding an animal that meets all your needs. They are living creatures, and it's hard on an animal when it's taken away from it's home and moved to new circumstances. No one animal will be perfect, and when you take on the responsibility of an animal, it deserves love and respect as well as a stable home. Any dogs with a wire coat or a curly coat will generally shed less than breeds who lack those features. Certainly checking out your local shelter is worthwhile as you may find the perfect companion right there! Otherwise, any poodle crosses will usually have these traits (although some may be more active). Miniature or Standard Schnauzers may be a good fit for you. Beagles and Cavaliers are generally very nice dogs but they do shed. Check out the AKC website as it has a wealth of breeds and information available. Honestly a mixed breed dog will be healthiest. Purebred dogs will be susceptible to genetic diseases, and due to this, some breeds like Pugs have big health problems like allergies, brachycephalic disease, and eye problems. Because mix breeds have a mixture of genetics, the risk of disease are lower. I would personally choose a mix breed small dog. I hope this helps!

Great question and kudos to you for doing your homework before adopting a new puppy! :-) Some of my favorite smaller dogs breeds that bark a bit less include a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Welsh terrier, or a miniature Australian Shepherd. Any dog will bark from time to time, but these breeds typically are quieter and have gentle temperaments. Another breed, a Shiba Inu, practically never barks but generally speaking, they tend not to be as agreeable. The AKC website has a tool that can help with "breed selection" based upon your lifestyle and needs, if you are exclusively looking for purebred dogs. Otherwise, there are plenty of rescues and shelters (even breed-specific rescues) that may be able to help you find a puppy if you are also open to mixed-breed dogs.

There is no such thing as a true hypoallergenic dog. They all shed and have dander, some just do it less than others. You can try a thing the puppy once a week as that can decrease the amount of shedding and keeping her groomed regularly
