Can my female Siberian Husky safely breed with an Alaskan Malamute?

You can also elect to have your male dog neutered within the next several days to eliminate the risk of pregnancy. If Iris becomes pregnant, she is unlikely to have issues giving birth, as most Huskies have pelvic canals which are proportional to their body size, and it is not certain that the puppies will be the exact size of the father (it is more likely that they will be somewhere in the middle). Your vet can also use x-rays and ultrasound to monitor the size of the puppies as Iris comes closer to term and recommend a c-section if necessary. It is very difficult to say for sure if she would be able to deliver the puppies; it is dependent on many different factors. It depends on how big Sadie is and the size of her pelvic bones. It also depends on the size of the puppies, as just because she mated with a large breed dog does not mean that her puppies will be large. I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian to discuss monitoring her pregnancy. Additionally once the puppies have bones an x-ray can be taken to determine the number and the rough size of the puppies. Hope this helps!

It is never recommend to breed a female to a larger male due to the increased size of puppies and the subsequent increased risk of dystocia (difficulty giving birth) leading to a c section. I would choose a male who is her weight or small than her to avoid any danger, so pick a breed of male that smaller than she is when she is fully grown. Please know that it is never recommend to breed a dog on her first heat. That's because she will not be fully mature either physically and emotionally, and that leads to an increased risk of dystocia as well as possible poor mothering. You should wait to breed her until at least her second or third heat (around 18 months of age). I hope this helps!

Hi there. Sounds like she may have a hypoplastic vulva. All female dogs can be at risk of having a hypoplastic vulva but medium to giant sized dog breeds have been shown to be at a higher risk. I suggest your friend have his bitch evaluated by a vet before attempting to mate her. Your male could cause serious damage to her. It may be more helpful if you could post again with a photo however, I'm not sure the answer would change much. It is best to have her evaluated before breeding. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

No this isn’t entirely correct. She does however have a greater chance of needing a C-section if the puppies end up being bigger than her birth canal. Which is why it’s best to have her examined by your vet and radiographs taken to look at the size of the fetuses. Yes a black lab can breed with a Shih Tzu but the problem is that the lab is so much bigger than your dog, meaning the puppies will be large. This leads to an increased risk of dystocia (difficulty giving birth) and likely an emergency c-section. There is nothing you can do about the owner of the lab unfortunately. I would have your dog spayed after she has her puppies so you don't have to worry about any unplanned matings in the future. Best of luck.

They can continue to get pregnant until they stop having heat cycles, which can be older than you would think.
