Why is my senior unspayed dog's breast getting bigger? Is it serious?

Poor girl. A photo would help here. Please repost with a photo of your pets enlarged mammary gland. IF she was spayed after she turned 1 year of age, there is a hig risk of mammary cancer. Swelling can also be caused by an infected mammary gland. I would have this mammary gland tested through your vet to ensure this isn't cancerous if it is not red and if the swelling is firm and knotty. I'm not sure if Dhuli is spayed or not. You say she is sterilized in the beginning of your post, but then at the end, you say she went into heat. If she was spayed, she could not go into heat. Intact dogs are prone to mammary tumors, and this may be causing her issues. These lumps look terrible, and I would be very afraid she could have malignant mammary tumors. You do need to take her into a vet asap. Best of luck.

In an older dog a swelling like this around the teat is most often a mammary lump. 50% are benign and 50% cancerous in dogs. They can be closely linked to hormones hence the fluctuation in size. Other causes would be mastitis or mammary development, but this photo does look like a lump. It can be tested by the vet to know what sort it is.

Unfortunately there are no natural remedies for this, and it does require veterinary treatment. You also need to be aware that 50% of these tumors are malignant, so there is a chance it is cancer. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet to get it diagnosed. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Hello. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then this is just a hormonal response. The breast gland tissue may regress a bit, but as long as she remains unsprayed, she may develop a little more with each heat cycle. Spaying her now may help regress the tissues totally, but with each additional heat cycle, she may develop just a little bit more. So yes, this is a normal condition in an unsprayed female dog. An unspayed female dog with a lump on one of the teats is almost always breast cancer. It could either be malignant or benign but, since you stated it has grown very large in a short period of time my guess is that it is malignant. it is very unlikely to be a hernia. Hi there. I am sorry to hear about Opal's troubles. In an unspayed, female dog, a swollen and red hot teat can mean anything from infection to inflammation to cancer. I would definitely have Opal examined by a veterinarian right away to insure she doesn't need medications like antibiotics or anti-inflammatories, to be sure she doesn't have a systemic infection of some kind, or also that she doesn't have a cancerous mammary gland.
