My senior female dog has dark bloody discharge. Is it serious?

My 11 year 8 months old female great dane has a dark bloody discharge. This started Monday April 22, 2019.

I recommend to have Izzy examined by her veterinarian today. Dogs who are in heat will have a bloody discharge that is usually very light colored. Infections in the uterus can be severe and even fatal if not treated quickly so it’s best to have her checked for this today. Cancer and vaginitis are also possible. This could be a urinary tract infection or a tumor, bladder stones and other condition. You should take Izzy to a vet for an exam and urinalysis and a blood test (checking kidney values , etc.). If there is a UTI or kidney infection she will need prescription antibiotics. Depending on the diagnosis, other therapy may be needed.

I would recommend taking Ginger to a veterinarian and having blood work and a urinalysis performed on her. She can have anything from kidney disease to a urinary tract infection. If the blood work is normal or they cannot find a cause for this I would potentially recommend an ultrasound of her urinary tract if she is having issues urinating. When animal urinate in small frequent amounts and they have trouble it can be something simple like a urinary tract infection but it can also be a bladder stone or even a mass in her bladder.

I would be concerned that what you are seeing now may indicated a pyometra (uterine infection), as this is a common cause of vaginal discharge in middle-aged and older intact females. Or it could be a very serious condition known as [pyometra](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/pyometra/), which means infected uterus. Especially if she had her heat cycle a couple of months ago, and if she's lethargic or has a fever you need to take her in to a veterinarian to be examined tonight. If she is spayed, this could be several things. She could have a [urinary tract infection](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-signs-of-urinary-tract-disease-in-dogs) and you're seeing her leak blood-tinged urine. I hope not, but depending on her age there could be cancer in the urinary tract that's causing bleeding (blood doesn't always look bright red). Very occasionally spayed dogs will continue to bleed if a piece of an ovary was left behind. Get her checked out by your veterinarian as soon as possible to figure out what's going on.

This can be a fatal turn right on Rio Grande St. infection leading to sepsis turn left on superior and death if left untreated. While antibiotics can decrease signs It will typically not fully clear the infection, which will cotinue to recur and worsen. If Izzy has a foul smelling bloody discharge she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

My dog's first heat has black, foul-smelling discharge. What's wrong?

It's not normal for a dog to have a black bloody discharge with a bad smell during her heat, and I would have Pip seen by a vet right away. I would be very concerned that this dark blood and bad smell could be indicative of an infection of the uterus. Have her seen by a vet ASAP for a health check.

Hi, it is probably better to have her checked over. Sometimes it can be secondary to hormonal fluctuations and changes in the uterus over the course of the years. However, best to be on the safer side and have a check up to make sure that she is not becoming anaemic and that the bleeding is not secondary to something else more concerning .

My unspayed female dog has creamy white discharge. What's wrong?

Uh-oh, this is quite concerning. This could be vaginitis, but probably is a uterine infection (pyometra, open). This is an emergency and she needs to be seen by a vet preferably today. Your vet will give Daisy a thorough exam, and then probably will want to do an x-ray to verify his diagnosis. Treatment is surgery to remove the uterus with all the pus contained. Antibiotics sometimes work, however that would only delay the surgery as she will have another uterine infection when she has her next heat. Please take her to your veterinarian ASAP.

My senior dog is bleeding vaginally. Is this an emergency? What to do?

If your elderly dog has vaginal bleeding you should have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible because that is not normal. If she has not been spayed it could be a sign of a uterus infection called pyometra which can be fatal if not treated immediately. Also it could be possible that she has blood in her urine which could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or possibly stones. If she worsens in any way, becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or starts bleeding more, you should have her seen by a veterinarian immediately.
