My senior pug holds urine then leaks. Is it a bladder problem?

Dribbling urine is not normal and can be a sign of urinary incontinence. Other issues such as bladder infections or muscular/nerve issues may also cause incontinence. Since your girl is a senior and is also spayed, it is possible the muscles surrounding her bladder have weakened. It is best to schedule a veterinary exam as soon as possible as well as bring in a sample of her urine to check for common issues such as infections. Your vet can then recommend treatment as needed depending on the underlying cause such as antibiotics to treat infection, or medications to increase bladder tone.

It sounds like Blacky had a urinary tract infection, which sometimes can become recurrent or resistant and difficult to treat. His urine may need to be cultured again to see if the infection has resolved. Sometimes bladder stones or polyps, or diseases like Cushing's or kidney disease could also cause urine leakage. Finally, he may have urinary incontinence due to a neurologic issue and require medication to help stop the leakage. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see if there are any additional tests they would recommend.

It's possible that Frida could have an underlying issue such as a bladder infection or bladder stones. If you haven't already, additional tests such as an ultrasound of the bladder or a urinalysis may clue you into the issue. If she's spayed, she may also have some incontinence issues as the muscles around the urethra may become weakened or unable to prevent leakage. If she checks out healthy, then looking into reverting back to an earlier stage of puppy potty training, or taking her out more often to give her a chance to fully empty her bladder may help.

I am assuming you are talking about the difference between incontinence and urinary tract infection. Usually during infection/ inflammation of the urinary tract/urinary bladder you can notice signs of frequent conscious urination (with small volumes), blood in urine, straining to urinate, fever, lethargy, inappetence. In incontinence condition usually urine leakage (unconscious) especially overnight or during sleep is seen. A check up and urine analysis at your local vet will quickly and easily diagnosed and resolve the problem. At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

Tiger will need to be seen by your veterinarian for an exam. The vet will need to do a urinalysis to determine whether there is a bacterial infection, or crystals or bladder stones. He may also be incontinent due to losing sphincter tonus. As he is an old dog, there is always a possibility of a tumor or prostate problem. There is no one medication for all of that, so please take Tiger to your pet doctor for an exam and treatment if indicated.
