Why did my senior dog die suddenly after not eating and black poop?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 11 months old

Hai Dr. Davis, I just wish to know what might be the cause of toby's death. I still cant believe that he is no more :( while talking his last breath,he went slightly backward with little shivering and he raised his tail upward and stopped breathing. His temperature was normal, I still cant figure out the reason. We looked after him everyday. But last two days he didnt have any food..but only water.Day before yesterday he pooped but it was black in colour. Our vet didnt say anything to worry.

It’s hard to know for sure. Toby was an older dog who was down and not able to walk for a while. That, and with the medication for his medical problems, may have effected his organ function. Some dogs stop eating when they don’t feel well, and some just don’t want to continue when they are that compromised and aren’t able to enjoy life like before. He’s at peace now.

Poor Tobey! Black diarrhea indicates bleeding in the upper GI tract. This could be due to ulcers, tumors of the GI tract, a GI infection, kidney failure, Addison's disease, eating something rotten, or liver disease to name some causes. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem, but as long as he's acting normal, you don't not need to rush him into the ER vet. Poor Boomer, I'm so sorry! For him to die so suddenly it must have either been a very serious infection that progressed quickly or he may have had an issue such as a tumour or heart condition that had worsened over time. It would be impossible to speculate any further into what caused his death. Most importantly it does not sound like he suffered, he was a good age and I don't think there would have been anything you could have done.

My senior dog is vomiting black and has dark stool. Is it blood? What's wrong?

Poor guy! From your description, it definitely sounds like something is wrong. Vomiting dark black material and dark tarry stools are often signs of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, which can be extremely serious. Not eating and not wanting to walk down the stairs are vague signs that indicate he is in pain or not feeling well. I would strongly recommend taking your dog to the vet today for an exam, since this sounds like quite a serious problem. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your beautiful girl. Without a necropsy (an autopsy) it's impossible to know exactly what happened or why she passed. Dogs can have heart attacks and strokes just like humans and it's possible this is what happened to her. It's strictly a guess but it sounds as if her passing was peaceful. Try to focus on the memories you created in those 6.5 years. She will always be with you in your heart. My condolences.

I am very sorry you lost Snoopy today! It could be that he had a tumor causing his symptoms, that could have been located in his brain or along his spine. A tumor pressing on his brain would cause him to lose the ability to use his legs correctly and be unable to control his bowels. A tumor on his spine could cause the same symptoms. He also could have had an illness causing this to happen. You can take Snoopy's body into the vet to do a necropsy (an autopsy) on him to see what caused him to pass away. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
