Why is my senior dog suddenly having accidents and not alerting?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My 11 year old grand dog has started frequent accidents in the house without alerting us. She is a yorkie but will literally pee or poop right next to you. She used to alert you or just sit by the door to go out. This is becoming a major issue. What do we do?

The first thing to do is have her checked by the veterinarian. It's possible there is an infection or other abnormality that is causing the behavior. Sometimes there is a neurological problem and the pet is not aware of what is happening. Dementia can also cause these symptoms. Some conditions have treatment with medications.
Since Khloe can't talk and tell you what is happening, it's best to play it safe. I hope this helps.
