My arthritic senior dog stopped eating. Can I switch to frozen food?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is doing well on the food you are feeding I personally do not think you have to change. Just watch her weight as obesity is a huge problem in labs and only worsens arthritis. I would first look with in the brand you are feeding to see fi they make a senior formula that is also lamb and rice. I do like Hill's senior diets but they only come in chicken. I am so sorry to hear that Ruby is experiencing this issue and I am sure it is upsetting for you both. I would suggest trying a bland but appetising diet such as boiled boneless chicken breast with steamed white rice. This diet is bland and easily digestible, while also hopefully enticing Ruby to eat with chicken. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If Ruby doesn't anything in the next 24 hours, becomes lethargic, depressed, collapses, vomits or has diarrhoea profusely, or you notice any blood, then I advise taking her in to see her vet. I would recommend talking to your vet about different kibble options or additives since they are more familiar with Jack's medical history. Often, using human foods to "flavor" dog food to encourage eating just allows the dog to start choosing what they want to eat. Jack is training you that if he doesn't eat his food, he can have something even more tasty. There are lots of different prescription diets that can be tried if Jack truly doesn't want to eat the KO anymore.

Poor Olivia. As they age it can be so difficult as their internal organs are functioning perfectly but their bodies are developing arthirits which can be crippling. I would start her on some joint supplements if you haven't already. I like dasuquin and flexadin. You can actually do both as long as your seaparate each one by 12 hours so you would give dasuquin in the AM and flexadin in the PM. If she has trouble slipping on slick floors I would consider buying some Dr. Buzby's toegrips to help with traction. You can also start her on an omega-3 fatty acid to help with her joints. I would also talk to your vet about an anti-inflammatory to help with pain and inflammation if needed. You don't have to give her this daily but just on the days that she is having a tough time. Although, if every day is tough, then don't hesitate to give it. Finally, I would consider getting her some acupuncture as this can really help relieve pain if you can find one in your area. The goal with geriatrics is to give the a good QUALITY of life over quantity so focus on her pain relief and her mobility to see if you can help her feel better. I hope this helps !

Grain free food has nothing to do with being hypoallergenic helping with allergies and actually has not been really shown to have any benefit over food that contains grain. There have been reports that have linked grain free foods with heart disease. I would consider feeding her a canned or wet diet which may be easier to eat for her. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You could add joint supplement such as Dasuquin or Cosequin to help with joint health. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Studies generally conclude that the human version of arthritis supplements are not able to be absorbed by dogs. Instead look for a supplement for dogs. The two I recommend our Dasuquan and Duralactin. Starting him on an additional omega-3 fatty acid for dogs will also help with arthritis. Lastly there is a food made by Royal Canin called mobility support. It is excellent for arthritic dogs. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Royal Canin is an excellent food, and I highly recommend it. I strongly urge the switch especially if the Merricks is grain free. There is a suspected link between grain free diets and an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy. The FDA is now investigating this link, and it looks like grain free diets are not good for dogs. Grains are good for dogs, and the grain free food is a fad. If you do switch food, you have to do it slowly to avoid GI upset. Start by mixing together 75% old food and 25% new food, and feed that for a couple of days. Then do 50% old and 50% new. Again feed for a couple of days, and then feed them 25% old and 75% old. After feeding that for another couple of days, you can feed them the new food only. In terms of your dog being overweight, feed according to the package instructions on the bag of food, no treats, and exercise daily. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
