My IBD dog won't eat his Royal Canin KO. How to avoid stomach upset?

I'm not sure this vomiting is related to the new food. One would expect that the colon and the stomach should be one the same page since they are all part of the same tract. So if a food upsets the stomach, it is likely it will upset the colon. The fact that the KO fixed the colon (ie the poop issues) but now Jack is vomiting is not expected and is unusual. I don't recommend to switch the food unless your vet advises it. Instead, call your vet. They may recommend steroids or another medical treatment for the IBD. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a cancer like GI lymphoma. If you do want to try a food, I recommend a hydrolyzed diet since it will diagnose all types of adverse food reactions. The formula I recommend is Royal Canin Ultamino. If Jack is normal weight he is eating enough and is regulating his food intake to exercise expenditure. Especially in the hot summer many dogs are less active and don't want to eat much. If he's thin then I would try a food made for sensitive stomachs or a bland one of chicken and rice. I don't like to switch around too much as the constant change can irritate their stomach and make some dogs fussy eaters. One other thing that you could try to help entice him to eat some of the white rice would be to pour some low sodium chicken broth onto it to help it have more flavor and be similar to the chicken that is eating. In general since he will hopefully be on this bland diet for a short period of time, if he continues to eat only the chicken or protein in the meal, this will not cause any significant problems. As long as Jacky is not sick and is otherwise normal, I would recommend switching to a different food altogether and consider canned food as well. If you still find he has a picky appetite, I would recommend adding chicken breast or broth to his current diet and see if this helps increase his appetite. I hope this helps! Generally more frequently feeding solves bilious vomiting. If he won't eat more than twice a day, it's fine to mix in something to entice him and pumpkin puree is a fine choice. A little rice or oatmeal could also do the trick. Just watch for worsening of the IBD when you add in another food and don't use any food he's had before. My other advice would be that if he's vomiting and it's not after a long stretch of not eating, it's probably related to his IBD or something else entirely rather than BVS, so let your vet know so they can continue testing/looking/thinking. Royal canin is an excellent food choice with research to prove the quality of its ingredients and a balance nutrition for dogs. I would not advise feeding bread or other similar human food items because they are very filling without adding much nutritional value for Gabbar. If Gabbar has lost his appetite you can try to tempt him with boiled boneless chicken breast and steamed white rice. This is only a temporary measure however, and if the problem continues he should see a veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. Hello, I am sorry to hear about Kyro. Dogs are able to break down/digest bones. If Kyro did not demonstrate any vomiting/diarrhea and was eating well after this event it is unlikely that the bone was causing a problem. IBD is caused by excessive inflammation in the GI tract to certain particles in food. Most commonly it is the protein source in the diet that causes this inflammation. There are two different diet forms that are used for dogs with IBD. One is called a hypoallergenic diet. This means that the diet is specially made to take away any of the particles that could be leading to the inflammation in the GIT. Some diet options that fall under this category are Hill's Z/D or Purina HA. The second type of diet is called a novel protein diet meaning that the diet is made using a protein source that most animals haven't been exposed too. Diet options that fall under this category are Royain Canin Duck, Venison, or Rabbit formulas. All of the diets mentioned above are prescription diets, meaning that you will have to either purchase them from a veterinary clinic or you will need veterinarian approval to buy them elsewhere.
