My senior dog has a soft lump that's growing fast. Is it serious?

Looking at the photo and considering your description of the progression of this, I would suspect that it is a growing mass. It could simply be a fatty lump such as a lipoma. Other possibilities would be a soft tissue swelling due to trauma, but this seems less likely considering the progression. I would head to the vet and get them to test the lump to see exactly what it is. If it is just a lipoma and not causing bother it should not need to be removed.

It could be that Lady has a cyst causing this lump. In a senior dog, it could also be a malignant tumor or a benign tumor. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. If your vet sent her to a surgeon, then I would suspect that your vet believes it needs to be removed. I'm sorry you felt this surgeon was only worried about money, so I'd suggest speaking to your vet about a referral to another surgeon to get this lump diagnosed and possibly removed. It sounds like it's quite large if it's grapefruit size, and if it continues to grow, it could affect her ability to walk. In addition, if it is malignant, it needs to be removed as soon as possible. Poor Meesha has a very large tumour on her mammary gland. It is essentially a breast tumour, they can be benign or cancerous but in this case I think this one looks like a very nasty tumour. The wounds on it are because it has become ulcerated. I would suggest visiting another vet as this needs to be dealt with promptly as it will be very painful. To fix this Meesha would need the lump along with associated nipples removex. But firstly i would recommend having her lungs and lymph nodes checked for any spread of tumour. It will be a very big operation to put her through so you will need to weigh this up. If you dont decide to have this removed you will need to consider having Meesha put to sleep unfortunately. It would not be fair to her to not do something in this case.

It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I would take her into a vet today. Without a physical exam or diagnostics, it is difficult to determine if this is something to worry over. Ideally, a fine needle aspirate or biopsy should be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. X-rays of the limb may be recommended to rule out bony involvement. Since you state it is growing, it should be removed before it becomes too large. As it is, that is a difficult area to close after a mass removal.
