My dog has a lumpy, growing mass on his leg. What could it be?

Hi! This is a growth on my dogs leg; it has grown from about the size of an acorn to the size of a pretty big walnut. The texture is very lumpy, almost looks like grains of rice clumped together or a cluster of oblong shaped bumps in a cluster. It does not seem to hurt him but he also doesn’t like me to mess with it. Vet will remove but no definitive answer as to what it is.

Without a physical exam or diagnostics, it is difficult to determine if this is something to worry over. Ideally, a fine needle aspirate or biopsy should be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. X-rays of the limb may be recommended to rule out bony involvement. Since you state it is growing, it should be removed before it becomes too large. As it is, that is a difficult area to close after a mass removal.

This could indicate this mass has an infection as well as there recent enlargement could mean it is more serious than a benign growth. If so getting it removed sooner rather than later is a good plan.
If possible Tahki should get checked out by her veterinarian and this mass could be examined more intensively to determine what exactly it is and if surgery to remove it is needed. If that is not possible monitoring it for further changes and applying a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment may help.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Without pictures it is difficult to say but as with any mass, it is best to have it tested to ensure it is not malignant. I would recommend you have your veterinarian take a look at this for further testing to help determine what the masses may be. Looking at the photo and considering your description of the progression of this, I would suspect that it is a growing mass. It could simply be a fatty lump such as a lipoma. Other possibilities would be a soft tissue swelling due to trauma, but this seems less likely considering the progression. I would head to the vet and get them to test the lump to see exactly what it is. If it is just a lipoma and not causing bother it should not need to be removed.

That is a large, lobulated lump (no just one defined lump) in a location that would generally never have something like a swollen lymph nodes. I recommend making an appointment with your vet for a fine needle aspirate (where they aspirate cells from the mass and put them on a slide to be sent out for review) to determine if it is an abscess or a tumor/cancer of some sort. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Sudden, painless, pinkish-red bump on dog's leg. What is it?

With how quickly the bump appeared on Ellie, I recommend having your veterinarian take an aspirate of it. An aspirate consists of your veterinarian placing a needle in the growth to try to collect cells. They can then evaluate it under a microscope or send it to a pathologist to evaluate. This may or may not get us a complete answer. The bump could be a benign (non-cancerous) growth but it also could be something to be concerned about. The best way to determine if this is something at all to be concerned about is to remove the growth under anesthesia, send the growth to a pathologist and have a pathologist examine the tissue.

My 13-year-old dog has sore, growing lumps. Are they cancer?

With any new lump or lump that is changing, it is always best to have your veterinarian look at them and a fine needle aspirated can be done to obtain a sample of cells. If these cells look suspicious of a malignancy, then your vet can recommend surgery. From the photos that you have posted, my guess is that these may be benign, non-cancerous masses. These can still cause problems, though, by bleeding and getting infected. I would schedule Max for an exam at your earliest convenience so that you and your vet can weigh the pros and cons of surgery since he is a senior.
