Why did my senior boxer have a seizure and then pee herself?

It sounds like Misha may have had a seizure, as that would cause her to be out of it for some time, urinate herself, and take time to return to normal. She may have hit her head when she fell off the sofa, and that could have caused the seizure. Please keep in mind that without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain if she had a seizure, but it sounds like it could be from your description. Because of her young age, the fact she fell off the sofa, and the possibility she could have had a seizure from head trauma, she should see a vet immediately to be safe. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Ruby has been having seizures. These episodes can be very frightening. When I see a patient for seizures under the age of four, I suspect they are due to epilepsy. However, when I see an older patient that begins having seizures, I am more concerned with a brain tumor, toxin, or diseases that create electrolyte imbalances. I would start with bloodwork to make sure there is no sign of any other problem. There are medications that can be given to control the seizures and make Ruby more comfortable, but I suspect the seizures will become more frequent over time. I wish I had better answers for you and Ruby.

Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes. She really does need some investigation into what is going on. If toxins can be ruled out and there hasn't been a traumatic injury to the head it is most likely going to be a central nervous system lesion. Unfortunately this is normally a brain tumour or similar. Epilepsy is still a possibility but rarely occurs in older dogs. I would recommend seeing your vet as soon as possible so they can start with some blood tests and take their investigations from there. Fingers crossed for you.

Other signs of seizures would be strange behavior before the seizure, the seizure itself can include shaking or tending of all the muscles, Bailey may urinate or defecate during as well. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and trying to film this if it happens again to show your vet. They can determine the cause of the seizure with blood work and more advanced imaging such as a CT scan. If seizure activity is confirmed, Bailey will likely be placed on anti-seizure medication.
