My senior dog has terrible teeth. Can she live without any teeth?

Hi. I'm sorry for Bella's mouth troubles. Unfortunately Yorkies tend to be predisposed to dental disease. If Bella's remaining teeth are loose or diseased, they should be extracted by your vet. She will feel so much better! My sister in law adopted a little yorkie that I rescue who needed all of his teeth removed due to periodontal disease once he was first found. He eats like a champ and gained weight after his teeth were extracted because he could finally eat without pain. Some dogs may reguire canned or soft food after a full mouth extraction but some still prefer their hard kibble (small bites) Once she is healed from the extractions, usually there is no further oral disease, though her mouth should still be checked at her annual veterinary visits. Ouch! Scrumpy probably had very diseased teeth that were already loose and they got knocked out of place in the scuffle. The other possibility is that she broke her jaw, although that is less likely She needs to go under anesthesia and have her teeth cleaned and any diseases teeth removed. I would recommend calling you veterinarian right away and seeing they can see Scrumpy today or tomorrow. She is probably in more pain that she is letting on and will be much more comfortable once those teeth (or her jaw) are taken care of. Best of luck!

Bad teeth are common in older dogs. Loose teeth can cause problems with eating and chewing, but what is also very important they can cause chronic mouth pain. You should take BoBo to your vet for clinical examination and to assess what would be the best way to help your dog. In most of the cases, cleaning and scaling teeth under general anaesthesia is recommended. Also, extraction of loose teeth is often necessary.

It sounds like there are some anesthetic concerns and that your vet does not feel comfortable removing the incisors. You may want to ask about referral to a veterinary dentist if available in your area. Ideally Frodo should also have an echocardiogram performed by a cardiologist first to determine the extent of his heart disease and assess his risk under anesthesia. If your vet is not comfortable with performing anesthesia on your pet, ask for a referral to a veterinary neurologist. Jodie may need to start medication for her seizures if they are becoming more frequent, and the neurologist can help you with that and also help discuss risk vs benefit for a dental. Denta disease and broken teeth are extremely painful, and should be addressed if the neurologist thinks it is safe. A veterinary anesthesiologist can also be recommended to perform the anesthesia during the dental if needed. In the meantime, keep a seizure log to monitor what is happening, and if Jodie has a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes take her to the emergency hospital, as this can be dangerous.

Getting Misty a dental with the vet is the best idea! The vet will determine what teeth need to be pulled, and which ones can stay. The vet will save as many teeth as they can. I would do what the vet recommends. I hope this helps!

I'm so sorry Peper isn't doing well at the moment! I work for a home euthanasia service, so this is a question I face with my clients regularly. It does sound like he has some dental problems, and you are correct that it is painful when a dog has loose teeth. The good news is that this isn't necessarily an issue that can't be fixed. Peper could have a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing by the vet who can remove any loose or broken teeth, which would relieve his pain. Having those painful teeth out will greatly improve his quality of life and extend his life. I would have Peper seen by a vet tomorrow to discuss doing a dental procedure on him.
