Why is my senior dog limping and breathing heavy after hitting stairs?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

hi there, my Yorkshire terrier (11yr old) is acting very strange right now, there seems to be a strong limp in his front right leg but he just isn't moving as much. he is staying in one place he was breathing heavy for a bit as well. I had taken him for a walk below my building today, when going down the stairs he hit the last step with a bit of force however i didn't notice any major limp since the return or even after 10hrs. he is not an active dog and is now moving less than 10% than usual

Poor Chieco! He could have injured himself on that last step during his walk today, leading him to limp and breath heavily (this can be an addition sign of pain). The pain may have gotten worse over time, eventually causing the limp. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps and Chieco feels better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Albert. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This could explain the symptoms that he is displaying. The veterinarian will examine him and determine if this is the case. If so, x-rays may be recommended. From there, anti-inflammatory medication, pain medication and muscle relaxants are typically prescribed. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs I hope this information helps!

Jst keep him as rested as possible, prevent him from running and jumping as it will probably get worse if he does. Human pain killers are not safe for dog so you will have to wait for the vet appointment in order to give him any meds.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chico. If he is limping, this means that his leg is painful to him. Being a young dog, muscular injury from rough play is likely. He also could have a congenital problem where his kneecaps are loose and slip in and out of place. This can cause lameness as well. If he is eating and drinking and acting normal otherwise, you can give him strict rest for 24 hours. This means no running, jumping, stairs or playing. Carry him as much as possible. If the lameness does not resolve, then he will need to see his veterinarian. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

My senior dog fell down stairs. What should I watch for now?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! Luckily it sounds like he is ok for the moment. I would continue to monitor him for pain walking or getting up/laying down, or using stairs. Be sure he is able to eat and drink normally and is urinating normally. Look at his eyes and be sure both his pupils are the same size, and that there aren't any strange eye movements (i.e. pupils moving over and over toward the same side). Also check his mouth/teeth to be sure they weren't injured in the fall. If he develops any issues with these areas mentioned, or if he becomes increasingly lethargic or starts vomiting, then a visit to your vet is needed.

Poor Bailee! Limping can be caused by a fracture, arthritis, sprain, infections, or even certain types of cancer. I recommend keeping Bailee calm until you can get her in to see a vet. Your vet can take x-rays to determine exactly what is going on. I hope all is well!
