My dog is limping and quiet. If he's not panting, is he still in pain?

Poor Razor sounds like he has a couple of things going on at the moment. It could be he strained or torn a ligament causing him to limp, and he's definitely in pain if he's limping. The cough could be caused by a respiratory infection or cardiac disease. I would rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Do not let him on the bed, having him sleep on the floor. Is it a minor, short-lived pain like when you stub your toe? A sprain? Or did he break a bone? The only way to know is to see an emergency vet and take some x-rays. That being said, in most of these cases, they shake it off and are walking normally within a few hours. If he seems OK to you, it is completely reasonable to let him sleep tonight and if he is not himself by morning, then see the vet first thing. If he is worrying you or any other signs arise, you always have the option of heading to the emergency vet tonight. Under no circumstances do I recommend any human pain medication - most are unsafe in dogs. However, if you want to do something for pain, ice can be a tremendous help. Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) to the leg for 5 minutes every 4-8 hours is great for inflammation and pain. Best wishes to you and Uno!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mickey. The only thing you can do at home is to keep him quiet. Limit his movements and do not allow any running, jumping or stairs. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian though. He is very painful if he is holding the leg up. Shaking and panting also indicate pain. He may need x-rays of his leg to determine why he is limping. Based on these results, pain medication can be prescribed. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications at home as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Examine skin externally for any wound/swelling and see if he is still limping in an hour; if not continue to rest him and monitor him for today, otherwise take him to your local veterinarian for a check up as pain relief medications and a physical assessment would be ideal to determine exactly the nature of the injury and give you appropriate treatment options.
