Can my senior dog with IBD safely take multiple vitamins and zinc?

Usually we do end up giving some sort of supplementation to cats with severe IBD. However if their intestines are not absorbing things normally often we have to get the supplementation as injections. This is something your veterinarian could do or even teach you how to do. I recommend contacting them to set this up.

I understand being concerned about the cost, but seeing a nutritionist would be best. You don't want to give any vitamins or supplements that could interfere or react with Tater-Tots (LOVE her name!) medication for heart disease. It sounds like it may inflammatory bowel disease but he would need biopsies of his GI tract to diagnose. You could try a hypoallergenic diet like science diet z/d ultra and talk to your vet about low dose steroids (budesonide is a good choice for GI issues) if you haven't tried this already. Also I would have him dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer if you haven't already. I have had good success with this regimen in some of my IBD patients. It sounds like y'all have ruled out everything else. I hope this helps! if this doesn't work then I think intestinal biopsies are the next step.

If Molly is on a balanced commercial dog food, then she shouldn’t need any supplemental vitamins or minerals. Some skin conditions can be improved by adding zinc, but this needs to be prescribed by the attending veterinarian since higher levels of zinc are toxic to dogs.

Dietary management is key for reducing the severity of both IBD and pancreatitis but it is not always easy to find a food which suits both conditions. A restricted, low fat diet such as royal canin gastrointestinal low fat or hills i/d low fat can be very helpful in such cases. Depending on the degree of the heart disease, your vet may wish to prescribe heart medication or continue to monitor closely for any changes

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Feeding a high quality, high fiber, low fat, and low allergen diet will be important. Hill's HA or z/d are good places to start, and then you can introduce other foods in slowly, one at a time, to determine what food is causing the allergy. Some dogs do well on Hill's HA, ID or ZD and just remain on that food strictly their whole lives. You can talk to your vet about different immuno-suppressive drugs that can be trialed. Immuno-suppressive drugs have side effects, so using as few drugs as possible is ideal. Also, since Scooby has urinary crystals, you will need to get a food that will help with the crystals as well, especially if you are going to start on immuno-suppressive drugs. I think that sounds fine! There is always a fair bit of trial and error in managing inflammatory bowel disease. Every dog is a little different, and we always strive to get the symptoms under control with what ever combination of meds that work. Omeprazole works to reduce stomach acid, and Metoclopramide works to improve GI motility. Keep talking to your vet, and let them know how the new meds are working. And, if there is any concern about the new food bag, you could always purchase a new bag, in case there is a bad batch. Best of luck!
