Why is my senior dog suddenly getting hives and stomach noises?

These look like urticaria, or hives, and they are probably due to a contact hypersensitivity or an allergic reaction. If the hives spread after Benadryl or if you notice swelling around Cash’s face and eyes you should see an emergency veterinarian since sometimes corticosteroids are necessary to stop the reaction. It can be very difficult to determine what caused a reaction, but if you used any new shampoos or sprays recently I would avoid them in the future.

Yes, it sounds like hives but it is hard to say without seeing it. Can you re-post with a photo? You could use an anti-itch spray as it usually has something in it to reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. Without seeing the lesions it difficult for me to give too much advice. Please repost with a photo if you can. Of course, a vet visit is always recommended. Having someone look at the lesions in real life is always better than a photo. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!

That's not good. I wonder if Spot is suffering from a contact allergy causing his hives. Vomiting can also be a sign of an allergic reaction. I'm concerned about him and think it's best he sees a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. These do indeed look like part of an allergic reaction (wheals/hives) and generally settle down after 12-24hours. Monitor closely for any internal complications such as vomiting, diarhhea, panting or weakness from an increased heart rate which may require hospitalisation and intravenous fluid drip. It can be difficult to identify the original trigger allergy bloods and a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin anallergenic should be considered if recurring often

Hello there. It sure looks like Wookie has some hives! He must be having an allergic reaction to something. I highly doubt it is food related. Food allergies are actually quite uncommon in dogs. It is more likely to be something in the environment or he got stung by an insect. I would recommend you give him some Benadryl (diphenhydramine). NOT the non-drowsy kind. He is a big dog so he can have 3 capsules/tablets. Hide them in a small piece of hotdog or cheese or something he likes to eat. I know it sounds like a lot of medicine but dogs take a high dose as they metabolize it much faster than we do. It may make him sleepy but it usually doesn't. If the hives are not gone in the morning or if you notice him have any trouble breathing, you need to take him to the vet right away. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Wookie! Dr. Amber

Poor Gia! Please call a vet near you immediately to have her seen to help treat the hives. Since she's had 7 days worth of medication and the hives only appeared today it is not very likely that they were caused by the antibiotics, but I recommend telling your vet about them just in case. Gia may have ingested something she is allergic to or have been bitten/stung by something she is allergic to, and your vet can help direct treatment to prevent spreading of the hives and worsening of her symptoms. If you notice any difficulty breathing that is an emergency situation, as it could indicate a severe allergic reaction, and requires immediate vet care. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!
