My weak senior dog has demodex. Can't get to vet, what can I do?

I believe you have a typo here and you meant to say to that your pet Vito has a demodexx note problem. I am assuming this because of your pets age and breed. The easiest way to cure demodexx these days is to give your pet either Bravecto or Nexgard for 1-3 months. These are actually labeled flea/tick preventatives but they also treat for Demodexx successfully and a lot of my clients have been very happy with the results. They also like The fact that they can give one dose every 1 to 2 months and I have to give daily medication. This makes it very easy to give and the effects are just the same if not better than the old conventional way of treating demodexx which was to give a medication called Ivermectin daily. it is unfortunate that you have not build that trust with your veterinarians, but these medications do require a prescription so please ask them so you can get Vito started on medication right away to treat his skin condition successfully.

Judging from the photos, it appears that the demodex is becoming less severe and the head is in the process of healing with all of the scabs present. If the hair does not grow back and it seems like the demodex is still there, I would try other medications such as Fluralaner (Bravecto) or Afoxolaner (Nexgard). If Tyson is not on an antibiotic right now, it might help him as well as washing him in a Benzoyl Peroxide shampoo twice weekly. I hope this helps and that Tyson recovers fully soon! It probably is demodectic mange. I suggest you talk to your vet about putting him on Nexgard or Bravecto. Both are oral flea tablets that coincidentally also treat demodex. Easy to do and relatively inexpensive. They are prescription drugs though so you need to get them from your vet. So much easier than all the things you are doing and it works better. Hope this helps. HI and thank you for using PetCoach. Poor Tyson. I would recommend taking Tyson back to his veterinarian for a recheck. Often dogs with Demodex may develop secondary skin infections that require antibiotics to treat as well as treating the mites. There are some oral medications that may be used to treat Demodex mange as well, however I am not sure if they are availabe in your country. I would ask your veterinarian if there are any other options to treat Tyson if he is not improving. Before thinking about euthanasia I would suggest to discuss with your veterinarian a treatment plan to make him more comfortable. Some pain relief medications can be given in the long term to relieve arthritic pain, ear mites can be easily treated with ear drops and teeth can get descaled and eventually extracted if they are a source of pain and possibly infection. All these remedies will certainly make Tommy more comfortable. Poor guy. I would highly recommend asking your vet to perform a skin scrape on Tombo. These lesions are suspicious for possible demodexx mites. The trumectin is a Demodexx treatment; however, you didn't mention that your vet actually tested for this. If this is a mite problem, then a topical medicated shampoo can be used in conjunction with the injections to gain better control of the overpopulation of mites on the skin. Also there are several other products that treat for mites that may be more effective for him, such as the off-label use of Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica (have to be 6 months or older, so this may be an option depending on his exact birthdate). Also a skin culture should be done to determine which antibiotic will get rid of this infection for a certainty. Most skin infections will respond to broad spectrum antiobitcs, but there can be resistant infections that don't respond, which may be the case with your pet Tombo. This infection doesn't look particularly fungal in nature; however, if your vet already did a skin impression to confirm there is yeast present on the skin, then definitely continue with the Fluconazole treatment as prescribed. These viable tests (skin culture, skin scrape, impression) should give us a good idea on how we should be treating him from here moving forward. As a general rule of thumb, you can give you pet pet formulated fish oils for just about any skin condition in which the skin is red. Fish oils act as a natural anti-inflammatory and can also held with overall skin health. You can find these at your local pet store or through your vet office. I would also inquire with your vet about prescribing some antihistamines to help with any itching that Tombo has right now. That will help him allow his skin to heal and respond to all the treatments he is receiving. I hope this helps you find some resolve for Tombo's itchy/irritate and balding skin. Mara needs the medications to treat the mites. Some dogs do need lifetime treatment. The good news is that many dogs will respond to the new oral flea and tick medications such as Nexgard and bravecto which may clear or keep demodex in check. Mara should also be spayed- demodex has a genetic component so she should not have puppies but beyond this each heat cycle stresses her immune system and makes an outbreak more likely. Grain free is not necessary, while it shouldn't hurt her it is a marketing gimmick by food companies and not based on medical research.
