Why is my senior Pomeranian crying in pain after clear vet tests?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 10 lbs

Lady bug is a pom and 10 yrs old....she was crying tail dragging dont bark just kinda cry yelpy several times a day even laying down I took her to vet they sent me to animal hospital to get xrays lots of tests put over $800.00 on credit and they said nothing showed up sent pain med home she has narrow esophagas and fights with other sometime. so they said maybe a bruise or pulled something she tenses up but doesnt cry when picking her up her teeth prob need pulled suggested throat scope help!

I am so sorry to hear that Lady bug is still not well despite numerous tests and x-rays. Some pets have underlying disease that evades detection with preliminary tests like CBC/Chemistry/Electrolyte analysis and Radiographs; which is why we have more advanced imaging tests available such as MRI/CT scan and an gastroesophageal scope. You mentioned that the vet recommended scoping your poor baby to help determine the underlying cause. The scope is highly effective at detecting injury to the mucosal linining of the esophagus, stomach and intestines (when rectal scoping done). If that is what is recommended based on your complete history and lab findings through your vet, then I would say it is worth considering. Feel free to request a private consultation with either myself or another expert here if you wish to discuss Lady Bug's case in detail. I am sure there are lots more information that you can relay to us so that we both have a better understanding of what is all going on with her. Even normal lab findings can rule out certain disease processes, so it is best to review her entire case history when making any further recommendations on her care moving forward.

I need a bit more information regarding any other symptoms she is having in addition to the decreased appetite and what testing has been done so far to make a more detailed recommendation. But I can outline my thought process for you. The first thing I would want to rule out is any source of pain on her physical exam. Pain from dental disease, arthritis or back pain can all affect the appetite. Then I would do blood work and a urinalysis. The blood work should include a complete blood count, chemistry panel and a test for pancreatitis known as a cPL. Next, I would do chest x-rays and an abdominal ultrasound. I may consider a trial course of pain medication or an anti-nausea medication. I hope this information is a starting point for you and I am available for a consultation of you want to discuss Lady in further detail.

Why is my dog not eating for weeks, lethargic, with clear tests?

I am so sorry Chi hasn't been feeling well. If all the tests were clear then I would recommend having an abdominal ultrasound performed. This would look at the architecture of the intestines and stomach and see if there is anything else that could be going on with Chi. She could have pancreatitis, a foreign object, a bad gastrointestinal upset, and much more going on that may or may not show up on the blood work and might not even show up on X-rays. I would also recommend a bland prescription diet to help settle her stomach also. I would have a ultrasonographer or an internal medicine specialist to perform the ultrasound. Why is my senior dog panting, bloated, and experiencing heartburn?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lady! I love your pictures! There are many possible reasons for Lady's symptoms. The heart rate is fine, it is normal to have a low resting heart rate at home. The fact it isn't high is reassuring that she isn't in pain or distress. The panting can be from: canine cognitive dysfunction or dementia, Cushing's disease, feels over heated and a lot of older large breed dogs just overall pant more. Causes for the bloated belly are: overweight (fat in belly), enlarged liver from Cushing's, low thyroid, tumor in her belly. I think a Vet exam, blood work and belly X-rays are a good idea to see if there is a medical reason for the symptoms you are seeing. I hope this helps and I wish Lady the very best!

My senior Pomeranian is sick, not eating, in pain. What should I do?

Loss of appetite, lethargy and pain can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. These are serious signs and a veterinary evaluation is needed to know what is causing these and what would be best to treat it with. I recommend that you have Oscar evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Why is my dog shaking, hiding, and yelping despite normal vet tests?

Something must be underlying and causing her pain. She had x-rays of what? I would be focusing on the neck/spine and hip areas. X-rays are only one diagnostic tool. Have pain medications been tried or only anxiety medication? If nothing shows up on the x-rays then an MRI would be the next step.

My dog paces and pants, but all vet tests are normal. What's wrong?

It seems like something neurologic is going on with Luna based on the description of pacing and panting. I'm assuming this was the original problem with her when you took her to the other vets. It's encouraging that those tests were normal and helps to rule-out many life threatening problems, but it looks like more tests would need to be done to find the cause. I'm not sure what the stomach coating pills, antibiotics and pain are all attempting to correct, but I would need to know all of her previous information in order to comment on that. You may consider requesting a consult with one of our experts, so that you can send all the information, pictures and have the ability to chat back and forth for as long as necessary. It appears that an accurate diagnosis is lacking with Luna. I recommend scheduling a recheck appointment with one of the vets that has seen Luna and ask them what it will take to get a definitive diagnosis. Sometimes we attempt to treat for the common causes of a problem prior to suggesting costly diagnostics. If the treatment doesn't appear effective, then a new strategy is in order.
