Why is my senior dog clingy, not eating, and crying when touched?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 22 lbs

Hi My dog's behavior has changed...female 8 yrs, 22lb (overweight) chihuahua mutt. She follows me 24/7 or is always aware of my location. I can't say that I've seen her eat or drink...she has refused any water I've put in front of her. She also sometimes cries when touched...a kiss or pat on the head, picked up or moved in the night...but only sometimes. Her temp is 101; I've gently poked, pulled & squeezed her...no cries of pain. She can jump up & down from furniture & bed. Thx cathy

Hi Cathy, I'm sorry to hear that Demitasse isn't feeling well! A temperature of 101 F is normal. My primary concerns are her possible decreased appetite, random cries, and sudden change in attitude and being generally clingy. These are all pretty generalized symptoms, but it does seem that she's painful and not feeling well, so I'd recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible. Your vet will be able to do a thorough exam to see if they can detect pain anywhere, and will likely recommend running bloodwork to look at Demitasse's organ function, particularly with her decreased appetite. I would also recommend that you test her appetite a little bit with a few treats, or a little bit of bland food such as lowfat chicken and white rice - it will be helpful for your vet to know if she's eating anything at all, and if she can hold that food down or if there are any other symptoms such as vomiting. With the information they gain from the exam and any diagnostics, your vet can then offer specific treatment for her issue, and will likely start her on appropriate pain medication if warranted.     Hi Cathy! It certainly sounds like Demitasse isn't feeling well at the moment. I can say that her temperature is normal. A dog's temperature varies between 101-102.5F, so she does not have a fever. It is very concerning that you haven't seen her eat or drink, and that she is refusing any water you've put in front of her. Unfortunately her symptoms are signs of many different illnesses, and could be caused by systemic illness, infection, dental disease, inflammation, or injury. They could also be due to something serious such as heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, or even cancer. A senior dog's organs do not function as well as a younger dog, so it becomes especially concerning when they don't drink as it leads to dehydration. Dehydration can have serious consequences on their kidney function, especially if they already have kidney disease (which I'm aware you don't know if she does or not). The best thing to do is have her seen by a vet today for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis. These tests will tell the vet how her organs are functioning, and what could be causing her current symptoms. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. I am so sorry to hear of these concerns for Nypsy. Changes in behavior such as increased anxiety and inappropriate eating can be an indication of a neurological issue. This could be a condition known as canine cognitive dysfunction (doggy dementia), lesions in the brain can also affect behavior and are more commonly suspected if there is increased aggression or the onset of seizures. The change in appetite could be due to a metabolic issue such as kidney disease, which can cause a pet to feel nauseous. These types of conditions would require bloodwork with your veterinarian to diagnose. Dental disease is also very common in older, small breed dogs. It can contribute to changes in food intake due to oral pain. I would recommend tempting Nypsy with some tasty treats such as boiled chicken or a little canned dog food. Also do not offer her any more sweet tea-sugar is not good for our pets and if Nypsy is suffering from some sort of metabolic issue it could make things worse. When you are able I would recommend taking Nypsy to your regular Vet for a thorough physical exam and possibly some bloodwork to rule out anything significant.

Why is my puppy yelping when picked up, eating less, and lethargic?

I'm sorry to hear that Sophie has been seeming uncomfortable when being picked up a certain way, and is eating and drinking less. While more common in larger breed dogs, it is possible that she has some "growing pains", or panosteitis, in her long bones, which is painful for her when she is picked up as you are describing. This discomfort may be causing her to eat and drink less, and be less playful too. I'm glad to hear that she is not painful in her chest, abdomen or back. She may be suffering from neck pain, which can be a common occurrence in smaller breed dogs. If she continues to seem uncomfortable, lethargic, and have a decreased appetite and water intake, I recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. He/she can perform a thorough physical exam to better localize her discomfort and pain. He/she may also recommend bloodwork to evaluate for any underlying systemic disease that could cause her to have a decreased appetite and act lethargic. Please do not give Sophie any pain medications that are intended for humans, such as Advil or Tylenol, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snoopy. It does not sound like she is feeling well and will need to see a veterinarian if her symptoms persist. I worry that she is experiencing pain with her crying. Small breed dogs can be prone to neck or back pain. The muscles lining the spine can spasm in response to inflammation within the spine. In this case, she would need medications to control her pain. Be sure to keep her quiet in the meantime and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications. Encourage her to eat and drink if you can. I hope this information helps!

I advice that you have Meg evaluated by your veterinarian for a thorough examination and further diagnostics to be followed by therapy if indicated based on findings. At the very least, if she is confirmed to be in pain or discomfort, she could at least be started on pain control medications. Good luck!

Why is my dog crying, shaking, not eating, and hiding all of a sudden?
Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh I am sorry to hear Fido is not feeling well today. He is very cute! There are a wide variety of health problems that can cause shaking/crying and decreased appetite. Pain or discomfort from a number of health problems could cause the shaking and crying. Decreased appetite may be due to pain or can be due to nausea from any number of health issues such as orthopedic conditions, organ dysfunction, infections, autoimmune diseases, toxins, or certain types of cancers. Due to the variety of possibilities in this case, I would highly recommend Fido be seen by his veterinarian right away for an evaluation. He may need blood work and/or x-rays to help determine a cause so he can get appropriately treated. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Fido!

Why is my senior chihuahua sleeping and not eating after a scare?
I am sorry to hear about your chihuahua. Because of her age and her symptoms (lethargy and decreased appetite) I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian. We can certainly see medical problems in older dogs that can cause these symptoms such as kidney disease, infections, liver disease, and more. An exam by your vet and some bloodwork may help to be sure there isn't a treatable medical issue. If there are no abnormalities found, then they may recommend some over the counter products that can help with anxiety such as Adaptil which is a pheremone product available as a plug-in or collar, Zylkene or Composure which are calming supplements, a thundershirt which is a compression vest that calms some dogs. And in some cases prescription strength medication may be necesssary from your veterinarian.

My dog is warm, whining, clingy, and having muscle spasms. Vet needed?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Penny Monster is super adorable! The symptoms Penny is exhibiting are sadly vague. Slight decrease in appetite, whining and feeling warm can indicate a lot of things. Dogs tend to feel warmer than us and not have fevers. If she is whining while playing she could be in pain. Her neck or back may hurt or she could have something infectious going on like lyme disease. Lyme is from a tick bite that could have happened over 3 months ago. Also Penny isn't spayed, so anytime an intact female dog isn't acting right we are always worried about an infected uterus (pyometra). I think it is best to take Penny to the Vet sometime this week to have a physical exam done and her temperature taken. Hopefully all will end up normal! I wish you and Penny the best!
