What is this bleeding eye growth on my senior dog? Vet urgent?

Hi there and thanks for your post. There is a growth on the upper part of Riley's right eyelid. Many times, these growths are slow growing and typically will not cause a problem unless they become larger. When they do become larger, they can rub up against the cornea of the eye and cause eye irritation and infection which can cause the eye to become red like it is. At this point, it may be recommended to have the growth removed to prevent further eye irritation. I would recommend Riley see her primary care vet soon to have her eye evaluated. Your veterinarian will likely stain the eye to check for a corneal ulcer and may perscribe certain eye medications to help decrease inflammation. It may be advised by Riley's primary care vet to have this growth removed soon and this can most likely be scheduled with them for a later date at the time of the appointment. I would have Benjy seen by a vet immediately. It's very concerning that his eyes are so sore that the are around them is bleeding. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with them should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Benjy needs to see a vet right away to diagnose what is causing the bleeding and his sore eyes so he can be treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

It definitely looks irritated and like there could be a possible cyst or growth there. I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.

Oh no, poor Molly! That growth certainly doesn't look normal and I would definitely have it checked out by a vet. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, otherwise behaving normally, and is going to the bathroom normally, I would not say this is an emergency. It can wait until the morning to have her seen by a vet. In a senior dog, this growth could potentially be a malignant tumor, but it could also be a benign tumor. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the growth to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. I hope this helps!

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. The most common tumors that we see along eyelid margins are tumors called Meibomian Gland tumors. It is generally recommended to remove them when they are small since it can often be done without general anesthesia. If they continue to grow, the surgery will be more invasive. Sounds like it is causing the eye to become irritated for Winston. When this happens, it is generally recommended to get the mass removed surgically. I hope this helps!
