My senior dog smells bad. Can she take Cephalexin with her meds?

My biggest concern is that he could also have a bladder infection that is causing him to lick a lot and therefore also causing an infection on his penis. Without seeing him to determine exactly what is infected and whether or not the bladder is also infected, I cannot say that the cephalexin will work. I would strongly recommend to have him seen by your vet. If there is a urinary tract infection and it is left untreated, it could get much worse and even start to affect the kidneys. Your vet will be able to determine if the cephalexin you have will work or if you need something stronger. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking it any more and causing more irritation. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!

Using antibiotics is generally safe for pets with kidney failure, however Sofiya needs some aggressive treatment for her kidney issues. This could look like more testing, including an abdominal ultrasound, leptospirosis testing, checking for tick diseases, and other tests depending on what is going on with her clinically. It would also include treatment of IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, medications to lower her phosphorous levels, and others (again depending on how she's actually doing). In short, the Cefor isn't going to treat the issues in this bloodwork.

Usually cephalexin is well tolerated by dogs, but it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This can be alleviated by giving Molly her medication with food, but to be safe, I'd give your vet a call to let them know she is having these side effects. Cephalexin is a safe antibiotic and I am not aware of any side effects of long term usage. Using an antibiotic for a long period of time can however result in antibiotic resistance which is a major problem for animals and people. It is difficult to say how long is too long when you're talking about risk for antibiotic resistance. There are general guidelines regarding safe and prudent antibiotic usage - talk to your vet if you have concerns.

Bacteria cause inflammation to the bladder wall and this can cause blood in the urine. I would expect to not be able to see the blood in the urine in 24-48 hours. However, sometimes blood is microscopic, so it may be there even if you can't see it. If it has been longer than 48 hours and you are still seeing blood I would talk to the veterinarian that gave Hazel the antibiotics about possible x-rays or an ultrasound to look for bladder stones. Bladder stones can cause constant inflammation to the bladder wall and the antibiotics alone won't help with the blood. If there are no stones, I would talk to the veterinarian about anti-inflammatory options to help decrease the inflammation of the bladder wall and stop the blood. It is a high dose (22 mg/kg is average although there is a range because of capsule sizes) and in some cases we would dose reduce this drug with kidney failure (but if your pet has early changes this may not be necessary, is case dependent).
