Why are my senior dog's back legs crossing over? Is it arthritis?

This crossing of the bag legs often indicates arthritis in the hips and possibly the lower back. It is quite common for older dogs to get arthritis and nerve pain that can suddenly cause them to walk like this. This can often be helped, or alleviated with medication and possibly diet. Your dog could have arthritis which makes him unstable. He could also suffer from hip dysplasia (which can lead to arthritis) or have some compression of the spinal cord which can affect the hind leg movement. The more arthritis develops, the more painful it becomes for dogs to walk. If there is hip dysplasia and this worsens over time, some dogs can appear to walk as if they are drunk with wobbly legs. I would recommend having Athena looked at by a veterinarian so that the appropriate treatment can be recommended. I typically recommend a multi-modal approach and use anti-inflammatory drugs such as Carprofen, pain medications such as Tramadol, Methadone or Gabapentin. Hello! It sounds as if Carter's back legs are getting worse, which can happen with time, when a dog has arthritic hips. Hopefully he is back on his feet and more comfortable now! You can use a joint supplement such as Cosequin (ask your vet about this!), and help him by having good surfaces to stand on (ie avoiding slippery floors). If he is quite uncomfortable, you could ask your vet about some pain killers, or anti-inflammatories. Hope this helps!

I'm not exactly sure I understand what you mean by frog pose but I assume this means her rear end is sinking down when she stands? I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Take pictures or video of her standing or walking down the stairs. Make sure the veterinarian checks her nerves in her hind legs. This could indicate a neuropathy, a disc problem or it cold be related to her arthritis. It may be time for her to start medication and supplements to see if she improves. I hope this helps.

She could be suffering from a hip problem, i would recommend taking her to your vet to get her checked, possibly have an xray done, if she has a bad hips she needs pain killers/anti inflammatories at the very least .
