Science Diet Perfect Weight vs Earthborn for dog weight loss?

I've always had the best luck with Royal Canin and Science Diet. Not familiar with Earthborn, but that does not mean it isn't a good food choice. I have the most experience with Royal Canin between the two so I would recommend going with this brand. If Soska has problems on Royal Canin, then transition to a different food such as Earthborn. Maisy is adorable, but I agree she does look heavy. I'd recommend Hill's Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight. I would also exercise her daily to help burn calories and add in the her weight loss. I hope this helps!

I don't know what Science Diet formulation you are using but I would stick with that. Science Diet is an excellent company with a great reputation. All their diets are thoroughly balanced and tested. Wholehearted is grain-free and there is new evidence (scientific studies) that are showing a link between grain-free diets and heart disease in dogs. I would stay away from grain-free diets. Both the Royal Canin and ProPlan are balanced diets that are formulated to meet all the nutritional needs (both macro and micro nutrients). So you don't need to worry about that. Any diet can achieve weight loss if you count the calories. The issue with the 'fresh' diet is that they tend to be higher in calories which means Giuseppe cannot eat as much food. For dogs, this can be a problem because their stomachs work based off of a total volume of food. So if the total volume of food is small, their stomach does not send the signal to the brand saying they are 'full'. Typically the weight loss diets have more fiber than normal food. This allows dogs to eat more (thus feel full) but have less calories. I hope this makes sense and please feel free to post any additional questions.

They are Purina, Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Eukanuba-Iams. That being said, I always point out that when changing diets we go slowly over a week to ten days' time. We can sometimes be surprised how many calories are in a milkbone even. You can try a reduced fat or weight loss diet made by one of the brands mentioned above, and see if that helps. Before starting I always recommend a vet visit. An exam can be very helpful in making the initial weight loss plan. I will often discuss trying cutting out snacks and treats, a reduced fat diet, and monthly weight checks. If there isn't a difference in about 6 weeks, I will recommend checking thyroid levels to see if that is functioning OK. If not, that can slow down metabolism and cause weight gain. I would remove all treats and only use her food as a treat instead. If she is not losing weight on either of these foods within 2-3 months, I would talk to your veterinarian to discuss other options such as thyroid testing and prescription weight loss food. In my opinion, Wellness is not as good a food as Hill's Science Diet and I agree with the recommendation of your vet's office to keep your dog and cat on Hill's. Hill's has better ingredients and is overall a better quality food. In addition, the truth is that grain free food is really a fad. Only about 5% of dogs have food allergies, and of these dogs, the major of the food allergies are protein. Grain allergies are actually extremely rare, and I only recommend feeding a pet a grain free food if they have a diagnosed grain allergy. I personally recommend keeping your pets on Hill's.
