Is it true human food is deadly for Schnauzers? What can they eat?

I have fed my dog Purina ProPlan from when she was 6 weeks old up to now - 13.5 years! There will be feeding guidelines on any bag of dog food. Those are a good starting point as to the amount.

Carrots, squash, green beans and peas are all good choices, and a lot of dogs actually like them. Broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers are safe but generally not as "dog approved." Never feed onions, garlic, or chives, as these will cause red blood cell damage that will lead to life threatening anemia when ingested in large enough quantities. Ideally you would feed your dog consistently the same dry dog food. Some dogs have a sensitive stomach and switching up food/offering table food can cause stomach upset (vomiting, diarrhea), or can lead to a picky eater. Also some human foods can be toxic to dogs (raisins, grapes, and garlic and onion are not recommended). I would try to stick to a consistent dry dog food for your dog, which will also provide a more complete and balanced source of nutrition.

Ideally, a high-quality commercially-prepared diet should make up 90% of a dog’s diet, with nutritious treats making up no more than that last 10%. Commercially-prepared foods are formulated to provide proper balances of vitamins and minerals, fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances can lead to a host of health conditions. There are some dogs or pet parents who prefer home cooked diets over the commercially available options. In these cases, the recipe for the home cooked food must be carefully balanced to account for any lacking nutrients, and are best formulated by specialists in veterinary nutrition. However, occasional treats of people foods, such as boiled white meat chicken, cooked sweet potatoes, turkey, green beans, or carrots are perfectly fine!

I would recommend only feeding a well rounded dog food. There is not really any reason to feed human foods. Dogs can actually be very sensitive to lactose. If you have to give human food green beans, peas and sweet potatoes in very small amount can be tried.

Schnauzers as a breed can have trouble with pancreatitis. Some times this is linked to hyperlipidemia (elevated fat in the blood). This disease can be diagnosed typically on a blood panel. If so, a different diet may be recommended for this disease along with medications. Options for diet otherwise would typically be a low fat prescription diet or seeing a nutritionist or holistic vet for diet planning. Home cooked diets can be great, you just need to make sure someone plans a balanced diet and a diet that is targeted for that disease process. Irati should eat about 1/3-1/2 cup of Science Diet puppy food per day mixed with some water, divided into smaller meals. Since she is still quite young and small, I generally recommend feeding 4-5 times per day. I'm working under the assumption that she is no longer with her mother, and as such is not nursing. If she is still nursing from her mom, she will not need quite as much food. As a future reference, following the chart on the bag of puppy food as Irati grows will be helpful, as you will frequently need to adjust the volume of kibble that she is eating. She should continue eating puppy food until she is 1 year old, after which time she can be transitioned to an adult dog food.
