Which flea & tick medicine is the safest for my 1-3 lb Chihuahua?

Treating fleas in such tiny pups is definitely a challenge! You can try bathing Dallas in original blue Dawn dish soap to initially kill off any adult fleas. Just be sure to rinse and dry him well so that he doesn't get too cold. While it's not my favorite flea preventive in terms of how well it works, Frontline spray is the only over the counter product available for such tiny pups. Given his young age, I assume that Dallas will be going to his vet in the coming days or weeks for booster vaccinations. During this appointment, your vet will be able to weigh him and discuss the flea treatment and preventive options based on his body weight. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frontline a topical flea medication and is safe for puppies 8 weeks or older and comes in a 0-22 lb size. Revolution, also a topical, is safe for puppies 6 weeks or older and has a size for under 5 lbs. Personally for a puppy Max's size I would bath in Dawn and manually remove the fleas. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would use Revolution until he weighs more. Also make sure you treat ALL other pets in the house. Once Max gets over 5 lbs there are a lot more option. It is a collar that provides up to 8 months of prevention. K9 Advantix II is also safe for dogs that are 4 pounds, and is a topical medication that is applied monthly. I recommend reaching out to your local veterinarian to see what products they have for the tiny dogs :) I do not recommend using a preventative that can be purchased from a food or pet store or online, as these are NOT safe or effective for use in dogs. Omega-3 supplements are generally very safe for dogs, but should be used in moderation as they are very high in fat. I hope this is helpful!

I really like Nexgard, which is labeled for 4 lbs and up, and as young as 8 weeks. It should be available from most vets. Hope this helps! I recommend a product called Revolution for very small puppies. While any product can cause a reaction, Revolution is well tolerated and can be used on puppies who weigh less than two pounds. Congratulations on adding Butler to your family.
