My dog has ticks. Is it safe to shave his fur to remove them?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 months and 19 days old | 17 lbs

my dog got lost recently, and we found him thank god. But I found almost 20 ticks on him, all small and none filled with blood. He is a border collie mix and I am debating on shaving him to make sure they are all gone. I know because of the double fur on dogs this causes them to overheat but he doesn't seem to have that kind of fur. Will I harm him if I buzz his fur

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should not cause him any harm by shaving his fur. I recommend also giving him a good bath with warm water and Dawn dish soap to try to eliminate even more parasites. Be careful not to get any soap in his eyes, though! I hope this is helpful. I'm so glad that you were able to find him and he is home safe!
