Are natural flea and tick remedies safe for my Shih Tzu puppy?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frontline a topical flea medication and is safe for puppies 8 weeks or older and comes in a 0-22 lb size. Revolution, also a topical, is safe for puppies 6 weeks or older and has a size for under 5 lbs. Personally for a puppy Max's size I would bath in Dawn and manually remove the fleas. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would use Revolution until he weighs more. Also make sure you treat ALL other pets in the house. Once Max gets over 5 lbs there are a lot more option. Unfortunately, natural remedies don't work well. This will not work well because if the flea life cycle. Your best option is to treat all the pets in the home. Depending on the age and size of the puppies, there are likely product restrictions (aka not safe). Top products for adult dogs are oral products such as Simparica and Nexgard (some can be used on puppies pending age and size). Top products for cats are topicals such as Revolution and Cheristan. There is also an oral product called Comfortis that both dogs and cats can take. You will need to switch all the pets over to a good flea product. Make sure to discuss these products with your veterinarian first. These products are generally safe for all pets but there are some conditions which are contraindicated for the oral products. Cleaning up and treating the house and yard will also help but it will not clear all the fleas. The main control is making sure the pets are on good products. This is what will ultimately stop the infestation. Also remember every female fleas lays about 50 eggs a day and it could take up to 6 months before the eggs hatch. Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

I would recommend Frontline plus as it is the safest for dogs that small. Also, I believe comfortis has a size for really small dogs but this product only controls fleas, not ticks. I hope this helps!

Natural products just don't stand up to pests like fleas and it will leave you very frustrated as a pet owner trying to get rid of them. J would stick with a good quality flea preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Comfortis. Frontline has largely grown out of favor because it has been ineffective in a lot of pets. The only over the counter product that may work in my opinion is Advantix or Advantage multi. Best of luck with your flea problems and I hope you get some resolve soon.

Advantage is available OTC and it's both safe and effective. It's a topical product that you apply directly to the skin. Follow package directions carefully, and be sure you purchase the appropriately sized product for Harper.
