My 2.5 lb puppy has fleas. What's the best and safest treatment?

I recommend a product called Revolution for very small puppies. While any product can cause a reaction, Revolution is well tolerated and can be used on puppies who weigh less than two pounds. Congratulations on adding Butler to your family.

Starla is so cute! First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. Both can be given to puppies her age and weight. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Treating fleas in such tiny pups is definitely a challenge! You can try bathing Dallas in original blue Dawn dish soap to initially kill off any adult fleas. Just be sure to rinse and dry him well so that he doesn't get too cold. While it's not my favorite flea preventive in terms of how well it works, Frontline spray is the only over the counter product available for such tiny pups. Given his young age, I assume that Dallas will be going to his vet in the coming days or weeks for booster vaccinations. During this appointment, your vet will be able to weigh him and discuss the flea treatment and preventive options based on his body weight. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

I would recommend Frontline Plus for Bella, unless she is really 1 lbs. If that is the case, I would recommend taking her to the vet to get something called capstar. This is a prescription and will require a vet visit.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frontline a topical flea medication and is safe for puppies 8 weeks or older and comes in a 0-22 lb size. Revolution, also a topical, is safe for puppies 6 weeks or older and has a size for under 5 lbs. Personally for a puppy Max's size I would bath in Dawn and manually remove the fleas. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would use Revolution until he weighs more. Also make sure you treat ALL other pets in the house. Once Max gets over 5 lbs there are a lot more option. Basically because he is very small and weighs under 2 pounds, the only safe product for him is Frontline spray which you can only get from a vet, this means you will indeed need to take him to the vet in order to resolve this problem.

Revolution can be used on puppies 6 weeks of age and older, and there is no minimum weight requirement. At 7 weeks old, he can use Advantage II if the puppy weighs at least 3 pounds, or K9 Advantix II if he weighs at least 4 pounds. If you prefer a flea collar, the Seresto collar can be used on puppies at least 7 weeks of age or older. After he is eight weeks old, you can use Activyl, or Frontline Plus, as well as some of the newer oral flea control medications such as NexGard and Trifexis.
