My puppy is under 2 lbs and has fleas. Can I treat them myself?

Treating fleas in such tiny pups is definitely a challenge! You can try bathing Dallas in original blue Dawn dish soap to initially kill off any adult fleas. Just be sure to rinse and dry him well so that he doesn't get too cold. While it's not my favorite flea preventive in terms of how well it works, Frontline spray is the only over the counter product available for such tiny pups. Given his young age, I assume that Dallas will be going to his vet in the coming days or weeks for booster vaccinations. I recommend to see your veterinarian for medication called Revolution. While any pecan have a reaction to anything, Revolution seems to be very safe for very small and very young pets. You will need to treat her for 6 months. I hope this helps.

I would recommend Frontline Plus for Bella, unless she is really 1 lbs. If that is the case, I would recommend taking her to the vet to get something called capstar. This is a prescription and will require a vet visit.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Frontline a topical flea medication and is safe for puppies 8 weeks or older and comes in a 0-22 lb size. Revolution, also a topical, is safe for puppies 6 weeks or older and has a size for under 5 lbs. Personally for a puppy Max's size I would bath in Dawn and manually remove the fleas. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would use Revolution until he weighs more. Also make sure you treat ALL other pets in the house. Once Max gets over 5 lbs there are a lot more option. Hi there, It kind of depends on the product, but I wouldn't use it on her if it's going to be a slight overdose. Sometimes products have a wider safety margin, but flea products can be toxic at higher doses. Ideally go buy a product that is her size, and that kills adult fleas and their eggs. You can also give her a bath to drown some of them. Sorry you have to deal with that, but congrats on your puppy. Also let the shelter know they have fleas... You can treat him with a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard or Frontline which are both labeled for use on puppies over 8 weeks of age. Ask your vet for the best flea prevention for your puppy. Continue to give him the flea medication on a monthly basis.
