Is it safe to give my dog calming treats for long cargo flights?

Hello! Travel can be very stressful so it's good you're looking into this for your pets. Unfortunately for pets traveling via air there aren't many oral medications that have been proven safe. Some of the calming supplements and thunder shirts have had some success with travel and could be tried. I recommend trying them weeks before travel just in case they don't work so different options can be tried. Continuing in acclimating your pet to the crate is a good idea. Try making it a safe place for your pet with toys, treats, favorite blanket, etc Lastly you should follow your airlines' guidelines on last feeding/watering. It can vary depending on flight lengths, layovers, etc.

Sometimes the over the counter calming treats don't work as well as we want them too. If the experimental trip fails then I would discuss sedatives with your Vet. I recommend providing blankets and toys that may make her feel more comfortable. You can ask your veterinarian for light sedative medications that you can give prior to the flight to help her relax. I would recommend acclimatizing them to their travel crate daily and start on a calming supplement or royal canin food 10-14days before travel and continue for at least 10-14days after. No dog should be expected to tolerate kicking or pulling of tails or ears and it is important to teach children safety and respectful handling of dogs. Crate the dogs unless directly supervised when young children are present

Hi there. You could try an over-the-counter natural calming supplement like Zykene or Composure prior to the trip, along with an Adaptil pheromone collar. Neither of these products should cause any significant drowsiness, and both are very safe.

Even though it is not marketed for use as a sedative, it is a safe alternative to the other options out there that are prescription. The dose that you will find is typically 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. NaturVet makes a type of treat called Quiet Moments that contains melatonin and I've had multiple clients swear by these treats. If you find that the Composure is not sufficiently relaxed with just Composure, I would schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure that Rexy is up to date on vaccines and flea/tick/heart worm prevention and to inquire about a sedative such as trazadone or prescription Xanax that your vet may be comfortable with for Rexy.
