Runt puppy won't latch. Can I just hold her to nurse every 2 hours?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hi there’s a runt puppy in my litter who’s half the size of the other puppies and has less hair she was born yesterday and she only latches on if I hold her to the teat I can’t bottle feed her because I’m afraid incase I do more harm than good will it be ok if I just hold her to the teat every 2 hours? She’s had a good meal and her belly looks round

Yes, helping her nurse every 2 hours should be adequate. I would recommend getting a kitchen gram scale and monitoring her weight daily. If she is not consistently gaining weight, you may need to start bottle feeding her to make sure she is taking in the appropriate amount of milk.
