My Rottweiler is underweight. What should I feed him for weight gain?

I would consider putting him in a prescription diet food like science diet metabolic or science diet R/D. I would also take him for slow steady walks daily if possible. Getting him to lose weight will make him feel like a totally different dog. If you become really strict on his diet and he still won’t lose weight, I would have his thyroid checked to make sure it isn’t low. I hope this helps!

A little information may be helpful like how old is your dog and what breed. Also, is he too thin? A photograph will help as well if possible. Make sure he is up to date on his deworming and that he has had his stool checked recently for other parasites which may steal nutrients and cause poor body weight. I personally don't feel Caesar is one of the best supermarket brands of food. I would try him on Purina One, which is the best of the supermarket brands in my opinion. Best sure to do the switch slowly to avoid GI upset. I hope this helps!

You can change to a light formula of science diet or Purina or change to a prescription food such as science diet metabolic formula to help. More importantly most people over feed as the bag recommendations are usually too much. A good starting point in 1 cup for 20 pounds of what they are supposed to be. For any larger breed dog, twice a day feeding is recommended and I would start at 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening that way you can still provide treats!

A Rottweiler is not a giant breed so you can feed any good quality complete puppy food for large dogs. Giant breed puppy food is formulated to ensure that dogs do not grow too fast, so would not give your puppy the required nutrition for its size.

Congrats on your new puppy! Rottie puppies should receive a high quality puppy food formulated specifically for large breed dogs. These types of diets contain the appropriate vitamins and minerals (calcium and phosphorus in particular) to ensure that growth occurs at an appropriate rate. The treats you are feeding are fine as long as they are in concert with an appropriately formulated primary diet. If you find that Bones is eating less food or having some sort of dietary upset, you can certainly change to a different type. Just if you do this, make sure it is done over the course of at least one week. This will reduce the likelihood of any significant diarrhea or vomiting during the transition period. Hope this helps!
