My 2-year-old Rottweiler is overweight. What food should I feed?

I would consider putting him in a prescription diet food like science diet metabolic or science diet R/D. I would also take him for slow steady walks daily if possible. Getting him to lose weight will make him feel like a totally different dog. If you become really strict on his diet and he still won’t lose weight, I would have his thyroid checked to make sure it isn’t low. I hope this helps!

Many pets like Brees suffer from being overweight. If you are looking for an over the counter product, try Royal Canin or Hill Science Diet (both brand carry 'light' diets). In my opinion, the prescription food made by Royal Canin called Satiety Support is a great option because the portions are large (which most dogs like) but they still lose weight. The other things that could be contributing to his weight problem could be a condition called Hypothyroidism. This commonly makes dogs heavy and have problems losing weight. A doctor can determine Brees' thyroid status with a simple blood test. Medication is needed to regain normal metabolism.

You can switch her to a diet called Science Diet metabolic weight management diet which is great for weight loss and just follow the feeding suggestions in the bag based on her weight. It depends on what food you are feeding, since the amount of calories per cup can vary tremendously from one brand or formula to another. If Zoey is a bit overweight, I would recommend feeding a weight control formula made by a good quality brand like Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan. These foods are designed to help with weight loss, and will have instructions on the bag for how much to feed each day based on your dog's target weight.

Royal Canin is an excellent quality food! I would feed Ceasar according to package instructions, and that will help him gain weight in a slow and safe manner. You can supplement his diet by giving him hard boiled eggs as a treat once or twice a week (no egg shells), and some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts a few times a week as a treat.

It is not necessarily about the amount of cups but it is more about the caloric content in each cup. You can follow the recommended amount of food in the bag (though they tend to recommend a higher amount than needed) or preferably have your veterinarian calculate the needed intake based on the most current weight.
