My 2-month-old Rottweiler puppy is losing hair. What could cause this?

Excess shedding can be caused by poor nutrition, parasites, etc. For a puppy so young I would make sure she is being fed an appropriate diet and is free of fleas and gastrointestinal parasites. Consider consulting with your veterinarian if the shedding does not improve. Check her coat for any signs of fleas or flea dirt and have her stool checked for parasites.

Puppies can have Demodex mites that cause hair loss without itchiness. These mites are not contagious. It is also possible that she has another type of skin infection like ringworm or a bacterial infection. I'd recommend having a veterinarian examine her skin. A skin scrape to look for mites under the microscope might be recommended if the pattern of hair loss looks consistent with Demodex.

Hair loss can be caused by a number of things. The most common one would be demodectic mange (caused by the Demodex mite). The red patches on her stomach could be due to ant bites out in the yard/on walks, or could be skin irritation if she is licking at her vulva. Licking at the vulva and getting a moist pyoderma (little red spots or infection) is common in young unspayed females as they often get vaginitis. The treatment is to have her spayed. Also, check the yard for ants or other little bugs that could be biting her. The hair loss around the eyes could be due to mange. If she is stressed or sick otherwise, the normal flora mange on her skin could be causing her to lose fur around the eyes. Also, she could have sarcoptic mange which can cause itchiness, but this is less likely. I would be more concerned about dermotic mange. I would recommend having her seen by a vet, and they will likely check her lymph nodes, and also do a skin scraping of the skin around her eyes. Best of luck with Cairo.
