Why is my young Rottweiler puppy shedding so much and what can I do?

Simba could have a parasites such as fleas, demodex, or scapies causing hair loss. Some of these would make him itchy too, but some would not. A vet can look for these parasites during an exam with some simple testing. In terms of the food, I don't recommend a vegetarian food for dogs. But I also doubt a vegetarian diet would cause hair loss unless Simba was already really sick from it. So probably unrelated. Do switch to a regular puppy food with meat if at all possible.

It is not very clear from the picture is this is undercoat which is dead and needs to be brushed out or deshed (this would be loose and come out easily with a comb or shedding tool) or if the coat is actually loosing pigment. Some pigment loss with age is quite common but it can also be an indication of poor digestion//absorption, liver issues or dietary issues. A high quality food such as hills vet essentials or royal canin rottweiler which has been enriched with all the nutrients required for a full coat and colour - improvement would be expected over 4-6 weeks. Monitor closely for nay other signs and symptoms such as weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea etc which would indicate the need to investigate underlying medical causes

Shedding excessively can have many reasons: 1) change of seasons...your dog sheds his summer hair to get a winter coat (this will depend on your climate) 2) food quality is not adequate 3) ectoparasites such as mange mites, demodex mites, fleas, ticks, etc. itch and the dog scratches excessively and loses a lot of hair 4) some dogs naturally shed more than others. 5) hormonal changes, e.g. your dog comes into heat. Females will shed their hair coat You can do the following: 1) feed a good quality complete commercial puppy food for large dogs 2) Check for ectoparasites and treat for them if present 3) Brush or comb your dog every day This should minimize the shedding.

Dogs typically have a heavy shed in the spring and fall, but they do lose hair all year. Brushing daily to remove the dead hair helps, and giving a fatty acid supplement for the skin and coat will reduce the shedding. Most likely, you will not be able to prevent shedding, especially if your dog is a larger breed with a double coat, such as a Labrador Retriever, or German Shepherd Dog. These types of diets contain the appropriate vitamins and minerals (calcium and phosphorus in particular) to ensure that growth occurs at an appropriate rate.
