How to deal with roommate's dog messy behavior and trash issues?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you aren't sure if she ate anything the best thing to do is to monitor her. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and not wanting to eat. Those symptoms can indicate that something is stuck or has caused an upset stomach. If this happens bring her to the Vet. I recommend making sure all trash cans have lids. Close all bathroom doors and put the trash cans up high on counters or tables. Start with basic training: "come" and "leave it" using treats. When you are not home crate her or lock her in a room that is free of things she could get in to. Hope this helps! Good luck!@

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Milo is adorable! Sadly there are some small breed dogs that will just not house train. But I think also that some owners give up because it is so hard. I think Milo needs to be crated when you aren't home due to his destructive nature and because he is not house trained. When you are home he should be leashed to you at all times and taken out very often. If he doesn't go when you think he should, he goes in the crate. All other rooms should be blocked by a door or gate so he can't wander off to eliminate in the house. Use special delicious treats, praise and play with him for 10 mins after he goes outside, even bring a favorite toy. He can never be out of the crate when you aren't home or when you are asleep. You can also train him to ring a bell when he needs to eliminate. It may take 2-3 months but if you are aggressive about it hopefully it will work. Also you may have to consider neutering him to fully eliminate marking behaviors. The destructive behavior will hopefully go away with age, but you can consider doggie daycare during the work week to decrease time in the crate. I hope this helps and I wish you and Milo the best!

Spanking is never recommended as a form of training. Ideally, Paco should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical cause for his behavior. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider crate training Paco to "remind" him he shouldn't do his business inside. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down. If he isn't on a schedule for going outside, start one. Dogs thrive on routine and he may respond favorably to a schedule. Don't leave him unsupervised indoors. Use a leash and attach it to your hip. Watch for his cues to go such as circling, whining or sniffing about. If possible, restrict access to the bathroom or other areas where he is going. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. When he goes outdoors, have a small treat ready and praise/reward him consistently when he does his business in the appropriate place.

If he is not neutered this can be a behavioral issue. I would recommend neutering him immediately to hopefully stop this behavior. I would also recommend crate training him. You must choose a crate that Hachi can stand up, sit down and turn around. A crate should only create a positive environment. Never use the crate for punishment. Despite what many people think do not line the crate with blankets or beds. Keeping Hachi in the crate when you cannot keep 100% eye on him is important. Every time you take him out of the crate take him on a walk to make sure they go to the bathroom and give positive reinforcement if he does. If they do not eliminate while you are outside then put Hachi back in the crate for another 20minutes. After 20 minutes take him out once again to try. If Hachi does go to the bathroom make sure you take time to play with him and when you have to turn your back again put them back in the crate. I hope this helps. This is just behavior commonly seen with her breed as they are dominant and challenging and require very strict and consistent training. These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Sally in person to really take care of this behavior. Hello. The accidents may definitely be tied to the inappropriate ingestion of garbage. Try to be more diligent securing garbage & placing things like cigarette butts out of his reach. At best, he may get a bit of GI upset, at worse, he may actually poison himself or wind up with a severe intestinal inflammation or blockage. Make sure he has easy access to appropriate chew toys like nylabones & Kong toys ( especially the ones you can hide treats in ). Invest in some puzzle toys & tire him out so he is less apt to wander the house looking for trouble to get into. Snoopy is absolutely adorable!! I would keep Snoopy in the crate when you cannot keep 100% watch on him. When he comes out of the crate I would then walk him (on a leash even if the backyard is enclosed). After he goes to the bathroom he can go off leash to play. If he goes then I would play with him and once you have to turn your back he goes back in the crate. If he does not go to the bathroom when you take him out of the crate I would put him back in for 20 minutes and try again. If you catch him going to the bathroom tell him no and take him and put him where you want him to go and praise him for going. If you just see the accident then clean it up and do not say anything to him. A crate should be big enough for him to stand up, sit down and turn around. The crate is a very safe option and dogs end up loving their crates, it's their safe house. Since we do not know what type of life Snoopy had previously this process can take some time and patience.
