How to help my new rescue dog adjust to a new home and stop crying?

In situations such as these, time is your friend, as well as patience. 4 years living solely outside is a long time for a dog, and that's a lot of years of work to reverse. You may want to treat Perseus as if he were a puppy, starting with a similar routine for feeding, potty training, etc to get him used to being around people and in/out of a house. Getting him used to you can take time. Always approach by talking calmly and gently and tossing a treat toward him. Not directly facing him and/or crouching down can also make you less intimidating and scary. Let him approach you first rather than you approach him, and be sure to quietly praise or offer treats any time he does. As he gets more used to you, you can then treat only when he allows petting or approaches you and accepts gentle handling. This can take a lot of time, so patience and always maintain a calm presence can help. It is also a good idea to speak with a trainer or behaviorist in your area who can come to the home and offer more tailored advice for how to help Perseus. They can help formulate a training plan as in the case of a behaviorist may also be able to recommend medications to help keep him stress free and relaxed as he learns how to be a dog.

I'm sorry that Lewis is having a hard time adjusting to his crate. A few suggestions. *be sure to leave the crate open at all times, and let it be a happy place for him. put treats and toys in there, and you can even feed his meals in there. Encourage him to go in there just to relax with the door open. Don't ever use it for punishment. * If the 2 dogs get along well, consider this-- I know it doesn't sound fair, because you've had your other dog for a long time, but if your other dog used to go in a crate, I would set one up for her as well. keep them side by side, leave them both open as described above, and when you leave the house or want to crate them at night, crate both dogs. (each in their own crate). Sometimes if a dog sees that his "buddy" is right next door and isn't freaking out, then this can provide some comfort and reassurance. Bubba is likely experiencing stress from the change in homes. This should decrease as he acclimates. Provide a warm, quiet area for him inside. Make sure he has easy access to food and water. Give him some space and some time to "settle in". You can use a pheromone product such as the DAP diffuser or Adaptil collar to decrease any anxiety. Have him examined by your veterinarian within 72 hours of arriving home to ensure good health or to treat any pre existing conditions.

Yes. It can be traumatic for young puppies to leave their mom, litter mates, and previous home that they knew. He needs to develop a new bond with you and learn a new home/environment/routine to gain confidence. Keep working with him and with time and becoming older he will learn. Consider short visits to a dog park or short walks to get him further acclimated. Praise and reward him as he progresses, but correct any negative behavior immediately.
